GAME RECAP

Karl Malone scored 20 points and John Stockton added 17 and a season-high 12 assists to lead the Utah Jazz to a 97-82 victory over the Atlanta Hawks, who lost their seventh straight game to match their longest losing streak in nearly six years.

Playing without injured point guard Mookie Blaylock, Atlanta equaled its seven-game skid from March 1st-13th, 1992. It is the Hawks' longest slide since dropping nine in a row in November 1990.

"There's not much to say here," said a dejected Dikembe Mutombo. "We can say whatever it is that we want to say, but there is nothing. You just have to win the ballgame. Nothing else -- just win."

Greg Ostertag contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Jazz, who took the lead for good with an 8-0 spurt to start the third quarter.

"We need him (Ostertag)," Utah coach Jerry Sloan stated. "We need his energy and we need his size. We've known that all along but it's up to him to get the job done."

Trailing 41-40, Utah went ahead to stay on Stockton's lay-in. Malone made a layup, Ostertag dunked and Jeff Hornacek sank a jumper as the Jazz built a 48-41 advantage en route to their fifth win in their last six games.

Steve Smith netted 20 points and Christian Laettner chipped in 13 for the Hawks, who led by as many as nine points in the second quarter.

"They (Hawks) were fighting an uphill battle all night," observed Stockton. "They played last night, they were tired, they're banged up a little bit with some of their great players not with them."

Atlanta jumped out in front with a 9-0 first-quarter run. Laettner began the burst with a three-point play before Mutombo dunked, Smith got inside for a layup and Tyrone Corbin had a bucket to give the Hawks a 15-9 lead with 4:01 to go.

Hampered by a strained right knee, Mutombo had 10 points and 14 rebounds but hit 3-of-11 from the field for the Hawks, who hit on 17-of-19 from the free throw line but shot just 38 percent (31-of-81) overall.

Aided by 29 fastbreak points, Utah hit 53 percent (39-of-73) of its shots. Shandon Anderson hit 5-of-6 shots for 12 points off the bench and reserve Greg Foster pulled down five rebounds as the Jazz enjoyed a 42-32 advantage on the backboards.

Eldridge Recasner gave Atlanta its biggest lead, 26-17, with a free throw early in the second quarter before Stockton scored four points to pace a 12-2 run by the Jazz. Malone capped the burst and gave Utah a 29-28 edge with a bucket with 5:32 to go in the half.

After the Jazz took a seven-point lead with their third-quarter burst, the Hawks pulled within 50-46 on a jumper by Smith and Mutombo's dunk around a basket by Hornacek. But Malone answered with a jumper and Ostertag recorded the bulk of his five second-half points with a three-point play.

Hornacek had 10 of his 12 points during the third quarter as the Jazz hit 9-of-12 from the line and 10-of-16 overall in the period.

Utah continued to pull away in the fourth, going ahead by as many as 20 points on the way to its second victory of the season over the Hawks.
