GAME RECAP

Chris Webber had 30 points and 10 rebounds as the Washington Wizards almost squandered a big fourth-quarter lead before holding on for a 110-108 victory over the Boston Celtics, who received 49 points from Antoine Walker.

Walker was 21-for-36 from the field, including 5-for-5 from three-point range, and matched the highest scoring game in the NBA this season. The 21-year-old Walker also grabbed 12 rebounds and had the best game by a Celtic since Larry Bird also poured in 49 points in a 152-148 double-overtime victory at Washington on March 15th, 1992. Michael Jordan scored 49 in a 111-102 double-overtime win over the Los Angeles Clippers on November 21st.

Walker scored 12 points in a 14-5 burst that he ended with a layup, cutting Washington's lead to 108-104 with 54.3 seconds remaining. After a missed jumper by Webber, Walker grabbed the rebound and nearly drove the length of the court before getting stripped by Chris Whitney. After the steal, Walker immediately reached in and received his sixth foul.

Whitney hit two free throws to give the Wizards a 110-104 lead with 25.4 seconds left. He also blocked a three-pointer by Chauncey Billups from the top of the key but was called for a foul. Billups made three free throws to cut the deficit to 110-107 with 10.1 seconds left.

Washington had trouble inbounding and Juwan Howard tried to call timeout, although the Wizards had none left. Dana Barros made the technical free throw and had a chance to win it but his three-pointer from the left wing hit the rim at the buzzer.

The Wizards never trailed and took their biggest lead at 92-76 with 9:11 left in the fourth period when Webber ended a 21-8 run with a jumper. Calbert Cheaney had 20 points and six assists and Tracy Murray added 16 points off the bench for Washington, which shot 59 percent (39-for-66) from the field.

Washington shot 63 percent (12-for-19) in the first quarter and held a 29-25 advantage. The Celtics tied it at 23-23 when Bruce Bowen converted a three-point play with 68 seconds left in the first. But Darvin Ham answered with a layup for a 25-23 edge with 52 seconds to go.

Webber had 14 points as the Wizards held a 55-42 advantage at halftime. Boston shot just 37 percent (17-for-46) in the first half.

Walker made a layup to cap a 12-4 run and cut Washington's lead to 71-68 with 2:49 left in the third. But the Wizards ended the period with an 11-4 burst that turned into the 21-8 run.

Ron Mercer recorded 18 points and six assists and Billups finished with 14 points for Boston, which has lost its last three trips to Washington.
