GAME RECAP

Stephon Marbury scored 19 of his 27 points in the second half and Sam Mitchell added 20 as the Minnesota Timberwolves won for just the fifth time in 35 meetings with the Portland Trail Blazers, 96-91.

Marbury dished out seven assists and Kevin Garnett contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who defeated the Trail Blazers for the first time in three games this season.

"Physical teams always give us problems, but tonight we stood in there and fought right with them," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We did a very nice job defensively and we rebounded very well. Mitchell made some big shots for us."

The Wolves trailed 89-87 with 1:30 remaining but scored nine of the game's last 11 points. Marbury snapped an 89-89 deadlock when he drained a three-pointer from the top of the key with 44 seconds left to put Minnesota up for good.

"Tonight we really needed this win," Marbury said. "We were on a bad stretch of not executing and not moving the ball. Tonight we got the ball out on the fast break and got some easy layups."

Former Timberwolf Isaiah Rider scored 32 points and Rasheed Wallace added 17 for Portland, which lost for the fourth time in five games. Kenny Anderson had 14 points and 10 assists for the Blazers, who have lost three straight for the second time this season.

"It was a tight game," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We did a lot of things right tonight but lately we've been finding wasy to lose. Earlier in the season, we found ways to win."

Portland went on a 9-2 spurt to claim its largest lead of the game at 34-24 with 9:36 left in the second quarter. But Minnesota responded with a 12-2 run of its own, highlighted by four points each from Tom Gugliotta and Terry Porter. A layup by Mitchell capped it and forged a 36-36 tie with 5:57 left in the half.

Portland held a 49-44 advantage at the break.

The Blazers led 60-59 with 4:04 remaining in the third quarter before the Wolves went on a 13-4 burst to grab a 72-62 bulge, their largest lead of the game, with 27 seconds left in the quarter. Marbury led the spurt with seven points.

Portland rallied for an 11-2 run, capped by Anderson's layup, to take an 82-80 lead with 5:23 remaining. Wallace had four points during the burst.

After Marbury's three-pointer, Mitchell and Garnett each made a pair of free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Minnesota was 29-of-40 from the line while Portland was just 15-of-18.

"Stephon hit the big three and that hurt us," Anderson said. "They came up with some big plays. We have to execute better and rebound. The Wolves played well down the stretch. The transition game hurt us tonight."

The Timberwolves shot 42 percent (32-of-75) from the field and held a 43-42 rebounding edge. Portland shot 42 percent (35-of-83), including 6-of-18 from beyond the arc.
