GAME RECAP

Jamal Mashburn scored 18 points and Tim Hardaway added 15 and the Miami Heat posted their fourth straight victory, 76-68 over the Portland Trail Blazers, despite hitting only two shots in the fourth quarter.

The Heat took a 65-55 lead into the final period and held on although they did not make a field goal until P.J. Brown's basket with 3:12 to play. Miami hit just 2-of-19 shots in the quarter connecting on 37 percent (29-of-78) of the field goals for the game.

"If you had told me before the game that we could hold them to 37 percent from the field and have a plus-10 advantage on the boards, I thought we would have had a chance to win," said Portland coach Mike Dunleavy. "Miami is a physical, veteran team. We couldn't loosen them up inside."

Kenny Anderson hit the Blazers' first shot of the final period with 7:09 to go, but Portland was just 3-of-16 from the floor the rest of the way. The Trail Blazers posted franchise lows in total points and field goals made (22) en route to their fifth straight loss.

"I just thought we were outstanding from the defensive standpoint," said Miami coach Pat Riley. "Even when we missed 13 in a row in the fourth quarter, we just stayed the course. It was the best defensive game we've played all year. We had to have it."

Voshon Lenard had 13 points and Isaac Austin chipped in with 10 off the bench for Miami, which connected on just 7-of-24 three-pointers. Alonzo Mourning ran into foul trouble and played just 17 sub-par minutes, scoring two points and grabbing six rebounds.

"Sometimes you run into game situations where you have to make adjustments," Mourning said. "We made them this evening and went to our bench."

The Heat took the lead for good in the second quarter when they reeled off 11 straight points. Mashburn ignited the run and gave Miami a 30-28 advantage with a three-pointer with 8:10 remaining. Terry Mills hit back-to-back shots from behind the arc before Mashburn capped the burst with a jumper with 5:25 to go.

Trailing 45-38 at halftime, Portland was able to get as close as 60-55 on a bucket by Rasheed Wallace with 2:23 to go. This time Hardaway sparked the Heat, hitting consecutive buckets and following a free throw by Mashburn with a pair from the line as Miami took a 10-point lead into the fourth.

"Nobody's offense was there tonight," said Hardaway, who was 5-of-13 from the field. "It was a good, hard-fought battle by both teams."

Austin had eight points in the first quarter to lead the Heat to a 23-22 lead.

Portland has not scored 100 points in its last nine games, including a 69-point effort on January 2nd.

"We have to do something about our offense," said a disgusted Anderson. "I don't know what, but we've got to do something. It's stagnant."

Miami won for only the third time in 21 all-time meetings with Portland.
