GAME RECAP

Rookie Tariq Abdul-Wahad scored 13 of his season-high 20 points in the fourth quarter, including nine in a decisive run, as the Sacramento Kings won their sixth straight home game, 108-96 over the Orlando Magic.

Trailing 84-78 early in the final quarter, Sacramento used a 13-2 spurt to take the lead for good. A basket by Olden Polynice, who had 12 points and 12 rebounds off the bench, sparked the run with 8:02 to play before Abdul-Wahad reeled off the Kings' next nine points.

"Tariq stepped up and played like a veteran tonight and that's what we really needed," Sacramento forward Corliss Williamson said. "Someone to give us a lift and he did."

Abdul-Wahad ended his burst when he reached for an overthrown lob pass from Bobby Hurley and attempted a slam that bounced off the front rim, high into the air and through the basket, building an 89-86 lead. Hurley, who hit five key free throws in a 21-second span down the stretch, found Polynice for a lay-in with 3:28 remaining to cap the run.

"Tariq was certainly a big factor tonight, all the guys that came in off the bench played well," Kings coach Eddie Jordan said. "Olden was big in 19 minutes and Bobby hit some big free throws down the stretch. It was unselfishness on offense and trusting each other on defense, that was what it was all about."

Mitch Richmond had 23 points and seven assists for the Kings, who have won six of their last seven games. Sacramento swept the season series from the Magic after an easy 115-89 victory in Orlando on November 12th.

"They got a lead and the momentum, but we really bounced back in the fourth thanks to Tariq and played some great defense," Richmond concluded.

Rony Seikaly scored 24 points but could not prevent the Magic from allowing more than 90 points for the first time in 10 games.

"We were in good position going down the stretch. We had the lead, but we just couldn't make a shot after that," Magic coach Chuck Daly said. "Abdul-Wahad hurt us, he was crucial for them coming off the bench. He's made a tremendous difference in this club."

Orlando started the final period with a 9-2 spurt, with a lay-in by Vernon Maxwell opening the 84-78 lead with 8:25 left.

After Polynice's bucket, Abdul-Wahad hit a baseline jumper, one free throw and a layup for an 85-84 edge with 5:37 to go. Mark Price, who had 14 points and nine assists, temporarily halted the run with a jumper. That bucket gave Orlando its last lead because Abdul-Wahad followed with a lay-in and his bizarre bucket on the pass from Hurley.

Abdul-Wahad and Richmond each sank four free throws in the final three minutes to help secure the victory, Sacramento's fourth in a row at home against the Magic.

"If he (Abdul-Wahad) shoots like that all of the time, he's gonna be a great player for them," Price said. "He was killing us out there."

Rookie Michael Stewart chipped in 12 points, eight boards and five blocks, helping the Kings to a 51-36 edge on the glass. Williamson had 14 points, six rebounds and a career-high five steals for Sacramento, which had 18 second-chance points compared to just two for Orlando.

"We got outrebounded, 51-36, and that's just too much to overcome in the other guy's building," Daly added. "The Kings are playing great, they're playing hard and they deserve to win."

Neither team led by more than five points through the first three quarters, which consisted of 21 lead changes and 18 ties.

Darrell Armstrong scored 14 points, Horace Grant added 12 and nine boards and Charles Outlaw pulled down 12 rebounds for the Magic, who fell to 1-1 on their four-game road trip.
