GAME RECAP

Rodney Rogers tied a season high with 29 points and Lamond Murray added 24 and a season-high 10 rebounds as the Los Angeles Clippers used their highest point total of the season to defeat the New Jersey Nets, 119-116.

Darrick Martin chipped in a season-high 20 points for the Clippers, who trailed 20-9 just over six minutes into the game but fought back to take the lead for good, 61-60, on Murray's layup with 1:21 to play in the first half.

The Clippers, who broke a four-game losing streak and improved to 1-3 on their current six-game road trip, had their previous high in points this season just six days ago when they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers, 125-115.

"We just tried to play to get a win," said Rogers. "We lost three in a row. It's tough like that when you are on a long road trip. It's easy to get down, let momentum go away from you. We tried to regroup tonight and get it back."

Keith Van Horn scored 26 points and Jayson Williams added 20 and 17 rebounds for New Jersey, which had its two-game winning streak snapped. Sherman Douglas handed out a team season-high 17 assists for the Nets, who have not won three in a row since opening the season 4-0.

"I think when you play against a team like that you start worrying about you're offense instead of your defense," Williams said. "The offense just came so easily. We lost concentration there for a while. Feeling good about each other, we thought we could put them away any time we wanted to."

Los Angeles led 90-88 entering the fourth quarter and extended the advantage to seven when Murray converted a hook shot in the lane and followed with a three-pointer. The Nets fought back within 106-103 on a jump shot by Kerry Kittles, but rookie Maurice Taylor dunked and Rogers had a layup for a 110-104 lead.

After the teams traded several baskets, Van Horn's three-pointer and two foul shots by Kittles cut the deficit to 117-116, but Martin and Taylor each connected on 1-of-2 from the line to seal the victory. After Taylor's foul shot, the Nets had a final chance to tie, but a desperation three-pointer by Lucious Harris banged off the rim.

"I was frustrated, but once I got in the second half I was gonna play the way I usually do," said Taylor. "Just do the things to help us win. If I was in for all four quarters it would have been like that for the whole game."

Taylor, who sat out most of the first half with foul trouble, scored 10 of his 12 points in the final quarter.

The Clippers, who entered the game tied with Denver as the NBA's worst defensive team at 102.7 points allowed per game, surrendered 100 or more points for the 24th time this season. Los Angeles improved to 2-20 against teams over .500 and won its first game in 15 tries against the Eastern Conference.

The Nets, who shot 55 percent (22-of-40) in the first half, led 60-56 with 2:10 to play in the second quarter, but the Clippers scored the half's last seven points to take a 63-60 lead.

New Jersey finished at 55 percent (43-of-78) from the floor. Los Angeles shot 56 percent (44-of-79) to help overcome a 41-29 rebounding disadvantage.

"We have talented players that when they play hard they can beat anyone in the league," said Nets coach John Calipari. "But when they don't play hard, they can be beaten by anyone in the league."
