GAME RECAP

Sam Perkins scored six of his 11 points in a key first-quarter run and Gary Payton added 20 as the Seattle SuperSonics handed the Miami Heat their worst loss of the season, 103-85.

Detlef Schrempf and Hersey Hawkins added 15 points apiece for Seattle, which remained perfect at home against the Heat, improving to 11-0. The SuperSonics, who snapped a season-high two-game losing streak, are 18-3 all-time versus Miami. Seattle avoided its first three-game losing streak since December 11th-14th, 1996.

"I think it was important because we played two quality teams in Chicago and New York and everyone started to ask a few questions," said Sonics forward Vin Baker, who finished with 13 points and six rebounds. "But to come back and play a team like Miami, one of the elite teams in the league and get an impressive win was important for us."

Alonzo Mourning had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Miami, which had a four-game winning streak halted. It was the worst loss for the Heat since a 103-71 beating administered by the Bulls at Chicago on November 13th, 1996. It was the first time since December 16th that Miami allowed 100 points in a game.

"Everytime we made a mistake it ended up as a basket for them," said Heat coach Pat Riley. "The only way you're going to beat this team with their defense is by attacking and drivinig and we stopped doing that in the second half."

Two free throws by Isaac Austin gave Miami its final lead at 17-15, but the Sonics responded with a 13-2 burst. Perkins hit two free throws and Ellis added a jumper for a 19-17 lead with 3:10 left. Perkins followed with two free throws and a 10-footer that pushed the lead to 23-17 with 2:04 left.

Austin hit a pair of free throws before Schrempf hit two of his own and Payton drilled a three-pointer, giving Seattle a 28-19 advantage with 26 seconds left in the first quarter.

Miami worked its way back into the game and closed within 56-54 on an eight-footer by Mourning with 5:47 left in the third quarter. But Baker hit a short bucket and Hawkins hit a three-pointer to bump the lead to seven. He added a free throw before two free throws by Jamal Mashburn pulled the Heat within 62-56.

Payton, though, hit a three-pointer with 4:11 left and Ellis capped the run with a 20-footer to give Seattle a 67-56 lead. A mini-spurt pulled Miami within five, but David Wingate hit a layup and Schrempf drained a three-pointer, giving the Sonics a 72-62 lead with 43 seconds left in the quarter.

"They double team and when you get double teamed, you're supposed to kick the ball out," said Mourning. "That was our game plan -- to kick the ball out and drive it."

Seattle hit 12-of-17 three-point shots as Hawkins hit all three of his shots from beyond the arc and Payton missed only one of his five tries from three-point range. The Sonics shot 47 percent (37-of-78) from the field and scored 22 points off 19 Miami turnovers. Payton also dished out eight assists and had two steals.

The Heat shot 43 percent (30-of-70) from the floor and only 4-of-18 from three-point range. The starting backcourt of Tim Hardaway and Voshon Lenard hit only 8-of-24 shots, while Payton and Hawkins were 12-of-23.

"We just didn't come to play," said Hardaway. "I know I didn't. We just didn't meet the challenge."
