GAME RECAP

Jalen Rose scored a career-high 23 points and Rik Smits added 20 as the red-hot Indiana Pacers posted their fourth straight victory, maintaining their Central-Division lead with a 117-92 triumph over the Sacramento Kings.

The Pacers have won 14 of their last 17 games and kept a percentage-points lead over the defending NBA champion Chicago Bulls in the Central. They took control early behind the hot hand of Smits, who scored 10 of Indiana's first 15 points, helping the Pacers to a seven-point lead they never relinquished.

"We played very well the first half," said Pacers coach Larry Bird. "He (Rose) played with a lot of confidence and shot well. If he keeps his concentration out there, he usually plays well."

The Pacers kept the pressure on, taking a nine-point advantage after one period and a 63-45 halftime edge en route to their 11th home victory in 12 games. Reserve Derrick McKey collected 12 of his season-high 14 points in the first half.

Smits had 12 points and Chris Mullin contributed 11 of his 15 as Indiana converted 63 percent (27-of-43) from the field in the first half. For the game, Rose hit 11-of-16 shots in bettering his previous high of 21, posted against the Atlanta Hawks on March 8th, 1995.

"Guys have been talking about winning and going into first place," Rose said. This is a great moral builder and a stepping stone. As far as my shots tonight, I was grateful to be able to get them to fall."

Mitch Richmond netted 24 points and Corliss Williamson 15 for Sacramento, which fell to 6-2 in January and 3-15 on the road this season. The Kings, who started their five-game road swing with a loss, have won just two of their last 13 trips to Market Square Arena.

The last four of Smits' first-quarter points were part of a 13-5 run that gave the Pacers an 11-point lead with 4:58 to go. A three-pointer by Reggie Miller ended the burst and put Indiana ahead, 22-11.

"We hit the big shots early and the rest seemed to take care of itself," said Smits. "We got it going 10-deep."

Miller finished with nine points in 21 minutes and Mark Jackson totaled 10 and eight assists for the Pacers, who drained 58 percent (49-of-85) of their shots and committed just 10 turnovers.

Anthony Johnson had 11 points and fellow rookie Michael Stewart added eight and eight rebounds for Sacramento, which hit 41 percent (33-of-80) from the floor.

"They use the pick-and-roll well," observed Johnson. "It was their bread and butter. Jalen was making shots and we struggled defensively. They made big shots and ran away with it."

Richmond gave the Kings their only lead, 4-2, before Smits sank a hook shot and Mullin nailed a three-pointer to put the Pacers on top to stay.
