GAME RECAP

The Minnesota Timberwolves erased a 24-point second-half deficit and posted their franchise-record fifth straight win as Terry Porter scored seven of his 13 points in overtime in a 113-110 victory over the woeful Dallas Mavericks.

Tom Gugliotta and Kevin Garnett scored 22 points apiece to lead the Timberwolves, who matched the second-biggest comeback in club history and moved five games over .500 (21-16) for the first time since entering the NBA in 1989.

Stephon Marbury and Chris Carr contributed 20 points apiece for Minnesota, which won in overtime in Texas for the second straight night.

The Wolves last came back from 24 points to win on February 17th, 1992 at Houston. They were one point shy of their largest comeback, accomplished March 1st, 1996 against the Charlotte Hornets.

Michael Finley scored 29 points and Samaki Walker added 23 for the Mavericks, who dropped their fifth straight game. Dallas also lost for the ninth time in 10 home contests.

The Mavericks were three points shy of matching the largest blown lead in team history. They blew a 27-point bulge against Phoenix on March 2nd, 1997, and allowed a 26-point advantage to slip away against Seattle on March 22nd, 1992.

With game knotted 99-99 heading into the extra session, Porter nailed a turnaround jumper to give the Wolves the lead, but Walker answered with a layup and then one of two free throws for a 102-101 advantage.

Porter's second three-pointer of the game restored the Wolves' lead before Walker hit another jumper to tie it 104-104 with 2:15 to go in the extra session. Gugliotta, who had 13 rebounds, followed with a jumper with 1:57 to play to give Minnesota the lead for good.

Minnesota extended its lead to 108-104 on Porter's spinner in the lane. Erick Strickland sank a pair of free throws to narrow the deficit to 108-106, but Gugliotta pushed the lead back to four with a baseline jumper.

Finley's first points of overtime cut the lead to 110-108 with under 20 seconds remaining. Dallas nearly rallied as Strickland stole the inbounds pass with 10 seconds left and was fouled by Porter, but he missed the first three throw and made the second to bring the Mavericks within 110-109.

Carr drained a pair of free throws with under three seconds to play to give the Wolves a three-point lead. After a timeout, Dennis Scott was immediately fouled. He made the first attempt from the line before intentionally missing the second try. Garnett, who grabbed 11 boards, snared the rebound and sealed the win with one foul shot with under a second left.

Walker scored 14 points and Finley added 13 in the opening half as the Mavericks built a 54-42 lead. Finley's third consecutive three-pointer with just under eight minutes left in the third capped a 15-4 spurt that gave Dallas a seemingly comfortable 69-46 lead.

Scott sank a pair of free throws midway through the quarter to give Dallas its biggest lead at 74-50. The Mavericks still held an 81-58 advantage late in the quarter, but the Wolves scored the final six points to pull within 81-64 heading into the final period.

Minnesota continued its surge to start the fourth. Garnett opened with a dunk and, after A.C. Green hit a short jumper, Marbury scored five straight points to cut the deficit to 83-71. Garnett and Sam Mitchell continued the burst with jumpers, and Porter nailed a three-pointer and two free throws to cap a 22-2 burst that narrowed the deficit to 83-80 with 7:45 left.

The Mavericks led 87-84 after Walker made a turnaround, but Garnett's second straight dunk and a layup gave the Wolves an 88-87 lead with under six minutes left.

Dallas responded by scoring the next five points. Scott buried a three-pointer and Robert Pack had a dunk that gave the Mavericks a 92-88 lead before Gugliotta hit a short jumper. After Scott and Garnett traded free throws, Marbury made a layup to tie it at 93-93.

Scott sank another free throw to give Dallas the lead, but a dunk by Reggie Jordan and a Gugliotta jumper gave the Wolves a 97-94 with 50 seconds left. Walker's turnaround in the lane cut the lead to one, but another Jordan dunk gave the Wolves a 99-96 lead with 18 seconds left.

Finley took the inbounds pass and dribbled up court before draining his fifth three-pointer with 13 seconds to go, forcing the extra session. Porter had a chance to win the game in regulation, but his foul-line jumper bounced off the rim.
