GAME RECAP

Antonio McDyess left to get his lip stitched early in the fourth quarter but returned to hit three crucial free throws in the final minute to lift the Phoenix Suns to a 96-87 victory over the Miami Heat.

McDyess was elbowed in the mouth by Miami center Alonzo Mourning with 9:32 to play, but came back and thwarted the Heat's comeback with the last three of his 20 points.

Miami, which trailed by as many as 25 points in the first half, started its comeback after Mourning fouled out with 17 points at the 7:08 mark of the fourth quarter. Jamal Mashburn, who finished with 25 points, scored 12 points in a row for Miami to pull his team within 91-87 with 1:03 left. But McDyess sank 3-of-4 free throws and Rex Chapman hit a pair from the line to ice it.

"Next to Shaq, Mourning may be the most intense center in the league," said Phoenix coach Danny Ainge. "It was a big break for us getting him in foul trouble."

Jason Kidd failed to record a point in the final quarter, just missing a triple-double with nine points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds.

"I knew I needed one more point for the triple-double," Kidd said. "I took a chance late and I missed it. But obviously the win is more important."

The combination of Mark Bryant and Cliff Robinson amassed only 16 points and five rebounds. The two had their hands full, as both fouled out after outmuscling Mourning in the middle.

The Heat center was in foul trouble himself most of the way. Mourning was 6-of-6 from the field but grabbed just four rebounds in 19 minutes.

"We came out with a big lineup again tonight and we weren't going to let anyone come in and throw us around," said McDyess. "I think that was one of the main things we did tonight, just go out there and beat up their big guys. We wore them down, I think we did a good job."

McDyess paced a 16-0 run in the first quarter, scoring five points and capping the lengthy surge at 29-14 on a pair of free throws with 1:21 left. Kidd and Robinson added four points apiece as the Suns held Miami without a field goal over the final 6:21 of the quarter.

An 11-0 burst in the second period gave Phoenix its biggest edge, 48-23. The Suns held a 57-48 advantage at the break.

"We're just not playing well right now," said Miami's Tim Hardaway, who had 16 points on 5-of-18 shooting. "The bottom line, we're not playing the way we are capable of playing at all. Things are just not going right for us right now. It was a bad start."

Miami used a 9-0 third-quarter run to narrow the gap in the fourth quarter. Hardaway ignited the burst with a fast-break layup with 6:54 to go. Mashburn scored and P.J. Brown converted a three-point play before Mashburn started his streak with a lay-in as the Heat made it 82-77.

But Phoenix hit 5-of-6 from the line to salt away its fifth home win in six games.

"A lot of little stuff too late," said Miami coach Pat Riley. "We just didn't play with any sort of passion tonight. None at all in the first half. We played much harder in the second half, but you're always asking for miracles when you're fighting back from a big deficit like we were tonight."

Danny Manning had 15 points and Chapman totaled 13 for the Suns, who shot 47 percent (35-of-75) from the field and held a 39-35 rebounding edge.

The Heat finished their road trip at 3-3 after consecutive losses at Seattle, the Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix. The three losses constitute their longest skid of the season.
