GAME RECAP

David Wesley scored 28 points and Matt Geiger continued his hot play with 13 and a career-high 16 rebounds, leading the Charlotte Hornets to a 93-86 victory over the Houston Rockets, who went down to their season-high fifth straight loss.

Wesley had 12 points in the fourth quarter, including back-to-back three-pointers that brought the Hornets back from a 70-67 deficit early in the period.

"We had a lot of opportunities coming off screen rolls," said Wesley. "When they tripled Glen (Rice) and doubled Mase (Anthny Mason), I got a lot of chances to make plays and help the team."

Houston fought back and forged an 83-83 deadlock with 3:01 to play, but Charlotte scored the next 10 points to pull away to its fourth consecutive win over Houston.

"Another nice try," said Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "It was a carbon-copy of so many games. Somehwere it has got to happen, somewhere we have to get it down."

Geiger, starting again for the injured Vlade Divac, posted a career-best 28 points on Monday against Toronto.

Clyde Drexler scored 20 points and Matt Maloney had 19 for the Rockets, who have lost eight of their last nine contests. Houston had not dropped five straight since January 25th-February 6th of last season, when they lost six in a row.

Rice added 19 points and Mason flirted with a triple-double with 10 points, 13 rebounds and a season-high eight assists for Charlotte, which made up an 11-point deficit in the first half.

The Hornets limited Houston to 13 points in the second quarter, building a 51-43 lead at the break. The Rockets chipped away in the third quarter and closed within seven before Mason's lay-in with eight minutes left gave Charlotte a 59-50 edge.

But Houston came alive behind Drexler, who scored eight points in a 20-8 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters. Rookie Rodrick Rhodes converted a three-point play with 10:09 to play, giving the Rockets a 70-67 advantage.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Wesley drained a pair from behind the arc and J.R. Reid, who had seven points to pace a small bench contribution, hit a jumper to put the Hornets ahead, 75-70.

"There has been a lof of games that we took a lead into the fourth quarter and lost," Tomjanovich said. "It is at least encouraging that we are in games to the end, but before you blink and eye, the lead disappears and you lose."

Charles Barkley had 13 points and Rhodes collected 10 for Houston, which shot 48 percent (35-of-73) from the field and was outrebounded, 40-34. Kevin Willis, the subject of trade rumors involving Toronto guard Damon Stoudamire, had a modest seven points and 11 rebounds.

"We are in an emotional funk right now," observed Barkley. "We need to make a decision on when we want to play."

"We have to still go out and give it a good effort, but it is a tough time for this ballclub," Willis said. "We must keep moving on and playing despite rumors."

Drexler made good on a three-point play with three minutes remaining to force an 83-83 tie, but Rice, Geiger and Donald Royal sank baskets before Rice and Wesley made two free throws apiece in the final seconds to beat back the Rockets' final comeback attempt.

"I realized down the stretch it was going to be a tight game," said Rice. "I knew I had to get go in there and give it my best."

Charlotte, which hit 49 percent (37-of-76) of its shots and committed only 12 turnovers, erased a 38-33 deficit in the second quarter with a 10-0 burst.
