GAME RECAP

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 26 points as the Vancouver Grizzlies posted back-to-back wins for the third time this season with an 88-80 victory over the Golden State Warriors, who suffered their 13th straight loss.

Sam Mack added 14 points and Bryant Reeves 13 for the Grizzlies, who have bounced back from their 13-game skid by beating Denver and Golden State, two of the NBA's most hapless teams. Vancouver will go for the first three-game winning streak in franchise history when it hosts Golden State in the finale of this home-and-home set Saturday.

"We will try to get another win," Abdur-Rahim said. "We have to go out there and do what we have to do. We are doing some good things out there."

"I'm just happy that we got two in a row," Vancouver coach Brian Hill said. "We got a road win. I thought what was important to me was an 80-point effort defensively. This is where we need to be to win games."

Joe Smith scored 23 points, only six in the second half, for Golden State, which continued its worst slide since dropping 16 straight from December 29th, 1984 to January 31st, 1985.

Golden State held a 46-42 halftime lead, but Vancouver scored the first seven points of the second half. Mack's three-pointer capped the spurt and gave the Grizzlies their first lead at 49-46 with 8:57 left in the third quarter.

The Warriors regained the lead at 62-61 on Muggsy Bogues' 16-footer with 1:17 left in the third, but Abdur-Rahim made a pair of free throws and Pete Chilcutt buried a three-pointer for a 65-62 lead entering the fourth. The Grizzlies have outscored the Warriors 49-31 in the third quarters of their two meetings this season.

Golden State battled back to grab the lead one more time when Brian Shaw sank a pair of free throws with 5:14 left for a 77-76 advantage. But rookie Antonio Daniels beat the shot clock buzzer with a three-pointer for his only points, giving Vancouver the lead for good. Mack followed with a pair of free throws and Bryant Reeves knocked down a jumper to extend the lead to 83-77.

Erick Dampier's follow brought the Warriors within four points, but Otis Thorpe and Abdur-Rahim each made two foul shots to open an 87-79 cushion with 1:30 to play.

The Warriors led by as much as nine points in the first quarter before settling for a 23-18 lead behind 10 points from Smith. Smith had seven more points in the second as Golden State went into the half with a 46-42 lead. The Warriors are 5-7 when leading at halftime.

Thorpe and Chilcutt scored 10 points apiece for the Grizzlies, who shot 42 percent (29-of-69) from the field.

Tony Delk finished with 16 points and Donyell Marshall added 14 for the Warriors, who made a season-low 28 field goals in 78 attempts (36 percent). Dampier collected 10 points and 13 rebounds to lead Golden State to a 49-37 edge on the boards, but the Warriors shot just 62.5 percent (20-of-32) from the foul line.

"Free throws hurt us an awful lot," Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "We didn't shoot the ball well period. We got 30 free throws and didn't make them. If we miss free throws, we need to come up with a few more rebounds."
