GAME RECAP

David Robinson had 17 points and 13 rebounds as the San Antonio Spurs coninued their success at home with an 81-75 triumph over their intrastate rivals, the Dallas Mavericks.

Rookie Tim Duncan recorded 13 points and 10 rebounds and Jaren Jackson had 13 and five for the Spurs, who have won 13 straight home games and defeated the Mavericks for the sixth straight time. San Antonio has won seven of its last eight games and moved one game ahead of the Utah Jazz for the lead in the Midwest Division.

"We fought all the way through tonight," Duncan said. "They threw a different defense at us and we had to adjust, so it was a good win for us. All in all, the end result is what matters."

The Spurs have not lost at home since November 26th against Washington and are on their longest winning streak in the Alamodome since December 26th, 1993-February 19th, 1994, when they won 14 straight.

Dennis Scott scored 17 points and Michael Finley added 15 for the Mavericks, who were trying to post consecutive victories for the first time since opening the season with three straight wins.

"It's just another one we let get away," Finley said. "We played terrible. The Spurs didn't play their best game. It shows that we can beat this team. When it came down to it we were in position to win this game."

The Mavericks, who shot over 50 percent for just the second time this season in Tuesday's stunning 107-98 victory over Seattle, made just 29-of-84 shots (34.5 percent).

Dallas scored the first six points of the game, but Jackson had eight points in a 17-2 burst that he capped with a jumper for a 19-10 advantage with 33 seconds left in the opening period. San Antonio led by six at the end of the first and opened the lead to 31-18 when Duncan converted a three-point play with 7:10 to go in the second.

Samaki Walker, who had nine points and 12 rebounds, made a dunk and free throw to cap a 13-2 surge and pull the Mavericks within 33-31 with 3:30 left in the first half.

"Rebounding on those guys is no easy task," Walker said. "With Tim and David doing most of the scoring it leaves another seven footer, Will Perdue, to just wander and get his hands on the ball."

Monty Williams, who had six points, made a layup to give the Spurs a 35-31 lead with 2:56 left in the first half. San Antonio held a 43-35 lead at the break. The Spurs scored the first five points of the third and took their biggest lead, 59-46, when Perdue completed a three-point play with 3:54 to go in the period.

Scott hit a jumper to cap a 12-4 burst and pull Dallas within 69-64 with 8:25 left in the fourth, but Robinson answered with a turnaround jumper.

Finley made a pair of free throws, pulling the Mavericks within 73-70 with 4:03 to play. Chuck Person reponded with a three-pointer and a jumper, bringing San Antonio's lead to 78-70 with 3:02 left.

"I was fortunate to be in position to get shots like I did tonight when the defense doubles down on David and Tim," Person said. "This team beat Seattle so there was no way we could look ahead."

"Chuck was out there wide open," said San Antonio point guard Avery Johnson, who handed out 11 assists. "He really won the game for us with the big three he hit and the two he hit after that."

Dallas managed to close within three points another time as Scott made 2-of-3 free throws with 68 seconds left. But after each team failed to score on successive possessions, Duncan made a free throw for a 79-75 lead with 18 seconds left. Scott missed a three-pointer and after grabbing the rebound, Duncan hit a pair of free throws for the final margin with eight seconds left.
