GAME RECAP

Anthony Mason scored a season-high 29 points and grabbed 16 rebounds and Glen Rice also scored 29 points and keyed a pivotal third-quarter run as the Charlotte Hornets edged the Dallas Mavericks, 94-92.

David Wesley scored 15 points and Matt Geiger added 10 and 13 rebounds for the Hornets, who have won three of four after a three-game skid. Charlotte trailed 64-61 with 5:50 to play in the third quarter when Rice drained a jumper to ignite a 14-4 burst that ended the period.

Mason's points were his most in one-plus seasons with the Hornets. He tied a career high with 30 against Washington on December 29th, 1995 while with the New York Knicks. He scored nine points in the final quarter.

"They got in and used their athleticism," said Hornets coach Dave Cowens. "We threw the ball away a couple of times and they capitalized on it. That may be the best I have ever seen him (Mason) play. He did so many good things and we shut them down for a while in the third quarter."

The Mavericks had a chance to knot the contest at 90 with 2:39 to play but Khalid Reeves was whistled for an offensive foul. Mason and Rice added a free throw apiece before two from the line by Michael Finley got Dallas within a basket.

Rice and Shawn Bradley exchanged baskets and the Mavericks had a chance to knot the contest with 32 seconds left, but a bad pass by Reeves resulted in an empty possession. After a miss by Wesley with 28 seconds left gave Dallas another opportunity, Finley missed a layup and Geiger came up with a block.

Geiger then missed two from the line with 7.1 seconds to go but Erick Strickland missed a three-pointer at the buzzer that would have given the Mavericks the win.

"We wanted to come out and be aggressive," said Rice. "We felt that if we gave Dallas a chance to hang in the ballgame it was going to be a much tougher game. We kind of let down a little bit in the second half and Dallas took advantage of that. Fortunately we were able to hang on and win the ballgame. When you have two leaders like myself and Anthony you have to realize that if things are not going right you have to take it into your own hands. We just took control."

Finley scored 24 points, Bradley added 23 and eight blocks and Samaki Walker had 13 and a career-high 20 rebounds for Dallas. The Mavericks, who were outscored 27-12 in the third quarter, have won just four times in their last 38 games.

"We had a bad third quarter," said Mavericks coach Don Nelson. "Really the key to the game was the back-to-back games. We had two guys that had food poisoning (Dennis Scott and Hubert Davis). We basically had six guys that played the whole game and that is tough on back-to-back nights. I'm really proud of the way that they scrapped and tried. I have no complaints about the game."

"Like I always said, we have good starts but we need to work on our finishing," said Walker, whose 20 rebounds are the most by a Dallas player since Chris Gatling had 20 on November 16th, 1996. "The last game we won was nice but this slip was not what we had in mind. We have to stick with it and just keep playing hard. The mental effect that this is having on me is that we are developing a team and I am still young and developing as well. We have to play smarter down the stretch."

Finley had 16 and Bradley 14 at the break as Dallas seized a 56-48 halftime advantage. Charlotte opened the third quarter with a 9-2 burst to draw within a point with 8:35 to go. The lead seesawed until an 18-foot jumper by Reeves gave the Mavericks a 64-61 advantage.

Rice began the surge with a seven-footer and Wesley followed with a 17-footer to give Charlotte a 65-64 lead. Finley hit an 18-footer to put Dallas back on top with 5:04 to go.

Wesley sank a 16-footer with 4:48 to play to put the Hornets ahead for good. Mason converted a layup and Rice sank a pair of free throws to push the lead to 71-66. Bradley hit an eight-footer to halt the spurt but Geiger and Wesley hit layups in the final minute for a 75-68 advantage.

Reeves hit a three-pointer to open the fourth quarter and Walker added a free throw with 11 minutes left to draw the Mavericks within 75-72. But Mason hit a layup to extend Charlotte's advantage to five points.

Two free throws by Reeves cut the deficit to three but Charlotte responded with a 13-5 burst to seize a 90-79 lead with 5:32 left. Dallas scored nine straight points, capped by Strickland's three-pointer with 3:20 remaining.
