GAME RECAP

Scottie Pippen scored 20 of his 29 points in the first half and Michael Jordan added 20 as the Chicago Bulls held the Vancouver Grizzlies to a franchise-low seven points in the third quarter en route to a 103-85 victory.

Chicago, coming off a rare home loss to the Jazz on Monday, limited the Grizzlies to just two field goals in the third period. Both the seven points and two shots made matched a franchise low, set in last season's February 19th loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

"I felt like we stepped it up defensively," Pippen said. "They're used to playing from behind, as their record shows. We knew we had to come out and play better defense (in the third quarter), as we allowed them to score too much in transition. We shut down some of those options."

Ron Harper scored 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting and Dennis Rodman grabbed 22 rebounds for the Bulls, who scored 25 points in the decisive third period. The quarter included a 14-0 run that boosted the lead to 85-57 on Pippen's bucket with 53 seconds left. Jordan had six points in the burst before sitting out the fourth quarter.

"It was nice for me," Jordan said. "I'm pretty sure Vancouver didn't like it. I think I've gone pretty heavy the first part of the season. I haven't had a game like this, where there's a 28-point lead in the fourth quarter."

The Grizzlies, who were shut out for the last 5:28 of the third quarter, shot 13 percent and missed 15-of-17 shots from the field. Sam Mack and Blue Edwards were the biggest offenders, missing three shots apiece. Rodman outrebounded the entire Vancouver team, 11-8, in the third.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Bryant Reeves, the only Grizzlies to score from the field in the third quarter, had 16 and 13 points respectively for Vancouver, which had a franchise-record three-game winning streak halted.

Pippen sank 13-of-24 shots in 35 minutes to go along with six assists and six rebounds. Jud Buechler led a 31-point contribution from the bench with nine points for the Bulls, who shot 47 percent (44-of-93) fromthe floor and held a 49-38 rebounding edge.

Abdur-Rahim pulled the Grizzlies within 62-54 with a layup early in the third quarter, but the Bulls reeled off nine straight points, pulling away for a 71-54 bulge. Harper scored seven points in the burst and capped it with with 6:59 to go.

Tony Massenberg netted 12 points and George Lynch 11 for the Grizzlies, who went to their bench early and shot 44 percent (35-of-79) overall despite their disastrous third quarter.

"We have to figure out if we're going to play defense," said Lynch. "I think that's our biggest problem right now. When we decide we're going to be a better defensive team, that's when we'll take our next step."

Jordan contributed 14 of his points in the first half as he and Pippen paced the Bulls to a 60-50 halftime advantage.

"Scottie Pippen played a great game," said Bulls coach Phil Jackson. "Dennis was good on the boards, and it was a good win for us to start off this road trip."

The Bulls' first stop of a six-game road swing was the first sellout of the season for the Grizzlies.
