GAME RECAP

Vin Baker had 28 points and 10 rebounds and Detlef Schrempf added 19 points as the Seattle SuperSonics built a big fourth-quarter lead and defeated the Utah Jazz, 101-93.

Dale Ellis came off the bench to score 12 points for the SuperSonics, who stopped a four-game road losing streak and became the first team to win 17 games away from home. Seattle improved to 7-7 all-time at the Delta Center, joining the Chicago Bulls as the only teams with a .500 record at Utah's arena.

"I came out with an aggressive attitude," Baker said. "Obviously with Gary (Payton) picking up some early fouls, I thought it was important that myself and everyone else pick up the slack while he was out."

"We really picked up our defense tonight and that was big for us," Ellis said. "We had a horrible defensive game against Sacramento and that's one thing we were going to do tonight was to play solid half-court and transition defense."

Karl Malone had 27 points and 15 rebounds and John Stockton added 14 points and 14 assists for the Jazz, who lost for just the fourth time in 22 home games and fell 1 1/2 games behind the San Antonio Spurs for the lead in the Midwest Division.

"One of the things was that we turned the ball over way too much, especially in the third quarter," said Utah coach Jerry Sloan, whose team committed 21 turnovers. "We started off in the first half, what did we give them -- 59 points? We got so anxious in everything that we did we ended up taking more outside shots than we did inside shots, because we had to hurry."

Last season, the Jazz were 38-3 at the Delta Center, then won 10 straight home playoff games before losing Game Five of the NBA Finals to Chicago.

Seattle, which is two games ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers atop the Pacific Division, had a 91-73 lead when Ellis completed a three-point play with 9:43 to go. But Malone scored six points in a 14-0 run, capped by Bryon Russell's three-pointer that pulled the Jazz to 91-87 with 5:09 left.

However, the Sonics scored the next six points, with Payton hitting a pair of free throws for a 97-87 advantage with 3:02 to play. The Jazz responded with six straight points and Shandon Anderson, who had 12 points, converted a three-point play to make it 97-93 with 2:06 left. But Baker made a jumper with 66 seconds to play and Payton followed 36 seconds later for the final margin.

Malone had nine points as the Jazz held a 32-31 edge at the end of the first period. Antoine Carr's dunk, his only points, gave Utah its final lead at 38-36 with 9:46 left in the second. Seattle responded with a 10-2 burst, capped by Schrempf's layup for a 46-40 lead with 6:39 left in the first half.
