GAME RECAP

Sam Mitchell, starting in place of the injured Tom Gugliotta, scored 21 points, including eight straight for Minnesota down the stretch, as the Timberwolves held off the Vancouver Grizzlies, 112-106.

Stephon Marbury had 31 points and nine assists and Kevin Garnett added 18 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists and six blocked shots as the Timberwolves overcame injuries to two starters to win for the ninth time in the last 10 games.

Gugliotta, the Wolves' leading scorer, did not play due to a sore left knee. Minnesota also lost starting guard Chris Carr to a sprained left ankle in the first quarter.

"A lot of guys played well tonight, especially some of the players off the bench," Mitchell said. "Stephon and Kevin played a lot of minutes and led our team. And to be a good team you have to deal with injuries and you can't fold when guys get hurt."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 19 of his 27 points in the second half and Otis Thorpe added 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who have dropped seven straight to the Wolves.

Vancouver trailed by 15 points at halftime but rallied in the third quarter behind Abdur-Rahim. He scored five points in a 10-4 burst and the Grizzlies closed within 74-64 on his dunk with 5:25 to play. The second-year forward scored 14 points in the period as Vancouver narrowed the deficit to 87-81 entering the fourth quarter.

The Grizzlies were still within 101-95 on Abdur-Rahim's dunk with 4:17 remaining. But Mitchell knocked down a 17-foot jumper with 3:56 left and a 16-footer less than a minute later to restore a double-digit lead with 2:41 to play.

Mitchell hit his third straight jumper to make it 107-95 with 2:15 to go. The Grizzlies made one last charge as Sam Mack buried two three-pointers in a 7-0 burst that brought them within 107-102 with 1:16 remaining. But Mitchell answered with a pair of free throws and, after a dunk by Thorpe, Terry Porter hit three foul shots to build a 112-104 cushion with 30 seconds to go.

"We played a solid 24 minutes," Thorpe said. "But that was in the second half. We had to dig our way out of a hole and we can't afford to put ourselves in that hole, especially at home."

The Wolves shot 54 percent in the first quarter in building a 35-27 lead. Vancouver closed within 55-50 on Thorpe's dunk with 3:09 left in the half before Minnesota closed with a 10-0 burst. Garnett scored the first six points on a 12-footer and four three throws before Marbury hit a pair from the line and added a jumper with 10 seconds remaining for a 65-50 advantage. Minnesota shot 73 percent in the period.

"We all stepped our games up," Marbury said. "Kevin Garnett played extremely well, Sam Mitchell came out and got the job done off the bench with 21 points. He had a phenomenal game."

"Vancouver hung in there and made a lot of great plays," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We answered with great plays from K.G. (Garnett), Stephon and Sam Mitchell. Stephon was phenomenal tonight, pretty much did whatever he wanted."

Porter finished with 11 points and Doug West added 10 for the Wolves, who shot 50 percent (44-of-88) from the field and held a 40-30 rebounding advantage.

Mack had 17 points and Bryant Reeves added 10 and nine rebounds for the Grizzlies, who shot 49 percent (43-of-88).
