GAME RECAP

David Robinson scored 28 points and rookie Tim Duncan added 27 and 12 rebounds as the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Los Angeles Clippers on the road for the first time in more than three years, 97-87, in the finale of a home-and-home series.

Avery Johnson contributed 14 points for the Spurs, who stopped a four-game losing streak at Los Angeles, winning there for the first time since November 25th, 1995. San Antonio has won 10 of its last 12 games and 22 of 26 to remain 1 1/2 games ahead of second-place Utah in the Midwest Division.

"They deserve a lot of cerdit for the way they played three quarters tonight," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said of the Clippers. "Their youth got to them, particularly in the fourth quarter, and we have David Robinson on the block. So it's almost not fair but we're not going to give it back."

Lamond Murray had 26 points and nine rebounds and Rodney Rogers added 19 and seven for the Clippers, who have lost seven straight. Darrick Martin scored 14 points and Lorenzen Wright had 12 and eight rebounds for Los Angeles.

"They've got those big guys in the middle and they plug up the lanes and make it difficult to drive," Murray said. "They hit a lot of shots down the stretch, big three-point shots. We weren't able to get the big boards down the stretch and make fast breaks off the rebounds."

Rogers hit a pair of free throws to cap a 17-7 run and give Los Angeles its biggest lead, 75-60, with 1:24 left in the third period. With Robinson on the bench with four fouls for most of the quarter, Los Angeles outscored San Antonio, 29-20. Chuck Person and Carl Herrera came off the bench to combine for 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting.

"We played three quarters of very bad basketball and then we really got some energy and some great play from Chuck Person and Carl Herrera," Duncan said. "They came in and they did it for us. They got us back on track. We played a fourth quarter that we should have been playing with the three quarters before that."

After Rogers' free throws, the Clippers were outscored the rest of the way, 37-12. Pooh Richardson's 15-footer -- his only points -- gave Los Angeles its final lead, 80-79, with 6:41 to play. Duncan hit a seven-footer to put San Antonio ahead 22 seconds later and Robinson had all of San Antonio's points in a 10-2 burst that ended with his dunk for a 91-82 advantage with two minutes left.

The Clippers jumped out to an early 10-4 lead but Robinson had 10 points in a 17-2 run that gave the Spurs a 21-12 advantage. San Antonio led, 27-24, after the opening period.

Murray had 12 points as Los Angeles grabbed a 46-44 lead into the break. His jumper capped a 17-7 run and gave the Clippers a 65-53 edge with 6:32 left in the third quarter.

"That's what nervous breakdowns are all about, losing games like that," said Los Angeles coach Bill Fitch. "We had a good game plan and we played within what we wanted to do. We played three quarters good enough to win. It's evident we didn't get the fast-break points in the fourth quarter. It could have been fatigue, I don't know. We had good play out of our forwards tonight. Lamond Murray really picked it up for us tonight."
