GAME RECAP

Rex Chapman nailed the go-ahead jumper with 12 seconds left and Cliff Robinson scored 23 points as the Phoenix Suns held the Miami Heat to only two field goals over the final 15 1/2 minutes en route to a 74-71 victory.

The Heat, who scored just 11 points in the fourth quarter, took a 71-70 lead with 1:46 to go on a pair of free throws by Tim Hardaway. But Chapman, who spent the 1995-96 season with the Heat, drained a long jumper from the left wing to give the Suns their 10th win in 11 all-time trips to Miami.

It was a double-curl and we used Steve (Nash) as a decoy," said Chapman, who finished with 12 points. "I was wide open. I know how much they prepare for every game, their whole regimen. So it's sweet coming in here and getting the win. We were scrambling and they were missing shots, it was a great effort."

Hardaway netted 19 points and Alonzo Mourning 15 for the Heat, who had 58 rebounds. But Mourning's basket with 3:46 to play was Miami's last.

Eric Murdock's jumper was the Heat's only other field goal in the fourth quarter, when Miami shot 2-of-20 from the floor.

Hardaway scored 12 of his points in the first half as Miami held a 39-37 lead. Th Heat built a 60-55 advantage after three quarters and led by seven following Murdock's jumper with 10:52 left to play, but were virtually shut down the rest of the way.

"It was a low-energy game for both teams," said Heat coach Pat Riley. "It was one of those games that came down to who was going to make the most shots and the least amount of mistakes."

Phoenix clamped down defensively and used a 13-3 burst to take a 68-65 edge after a basket by Danny Manning with 5:35 left.

Miami regained the lead, pulling ahead 71-68 when Mourning followed a pair of free throws with a basket and Hardaway sank a pair from the line, but the Suns rode a 6-0 burst of their own to victory, getting buckets from Jason Kidd and Chapman before Steve Nash sealed the win with two free throws.

It was the lone basket in 15 attempts by Kidd, whose club shot just 31 percent (25-of-80) from the field. The Suns did manage to hit 21-of-26 shots from the foul line while committing just 11 turnovers.

"We hung in there and thank goodness for the big shot by Rex," said Phoenix coach Danny Ainge. "You don't ever expect to win a game like this shooting the ball that badly. Our shooting percentage looked more like batting averages, but I would have loved that batting average."

Nash had 10 points and Manning 11 for Phoenix, which posted its lowest point total of the season.

Miami, which also shot 31 percent (26-of-85) from the field, committed 18 turnovers but received double-figure rebounding totals from three players. P.J. Brown had 12, Mourning 11 and Dan Majerle added 10 off the bench in the lowest-scoring game ever between the teams.

"I'm as disappointed as it gets," said Mourning. "We didn't shoot the ball well and it came down to the team that was going to make the right play down the stretch. There really isn't anything else to say."

The first-place Heat had their lead shrink to 2 1/2 games over the idle New Jersey Nets in the Atlantic Division.
