GAME RECAP

Mookie Blaylock and Steve Smith each had 20 points and seven assists, pacing the Atlanta Hawks to a 103-83 victory over the Charlotte Hornets, who had a four-game winning streak stopped.

Chucky Brown scored eight of his 13 points in the final period and Dikembe Mutombo recorded 13 points and 13 rebounds for Atlanta, which has posted consecutive victories following a five-game losing streak. The Hawks shot 52 percent (41-for-79) from the field and outrebounded the Hornets, 47-37.

"We worked very hard tonight," said Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens. "We have been struggling lately but I think we are coming out of it. We had lost some confidence but the last couple of games, we played as we are capable (of). Chuck and Alan Henderson had great production off the bench. We were trying to push it and to be aggressive. This is our personality and this is the way we need to play in order to win."

Glen Rice scored 19 points and David Wesley added 11, but the pair combined to shoot just 23 percent (6-for-26) from the floor for Charlotte, which has lost twice to Atlanta after winning three of four meetings last season. Anthony Mason had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Hornets, who shot just 35 percent (26-of-75) and never led.

"We looked a little sluggish tonight," said Rice, who was just 4-of-15 from the field. "We seemed to really struggle. Tonight was just one of those nights where we wished we could play better, but it just didn't happen. Hopefully, the next two days off, we'll be able to rest our legs and be ready and get into more of a flow for Tuesday night (Boston at home). It was just one of those nights that we'd like to forget about."

"The shots were just not falling tonight," said Wesley, who was 2-of-11. "I had a bunch of shots I should have knocked down that were in and out. This is going to come down to a real tight race, so you want to win and have the tiebraker advantage. I expected a tight game, but I also expected to win tonight."

Charlotte also lost guard Bobby Phills, who aggravated a groin injury and did not return for the second half. Phills had just returned Thursday after missing seven games with a strained left groin.

Mason scored five points in a 12-2 burst that he capped with a layup, cutting the deficit to 75-72 with 11:29 remaining. But the Hornets got no closer as Blaylock answered with a layup and Atlanta outscored Charlotte, 26-11, thereafter.

"If I get tired then Eldridge (Recasner) can come in and keep the tempo high," Blaylock said. "If I don't sit when I am tired then the rest of the team suffers. It is up to me to push the ball and to pressure the ball in order to get turnovers. We get our subs in and they keep the energy up. It is a long season. We are going to lose some games. This is a good win. If we go out and play the way we played tonight, we will be fine."

Mutombo had six points as the Hawks opened the game with a 17-7 lead capped by a layup by Tyrone Corbin with 6:19 left in the first quarter. Charlotte used an 8-0 spurt that ended when J.R. Reid hit a jumper to close the gap to 28-27 with 11:43 left in the second period.

The Hawks responded with a 10-2 surge, capped by Henderson's layup for a 38-29 cushion with 8:44 left in the first half.

Smith scored 14 points as Atlanta took a 56-45 advantage into halftime. The Hornets outscored the Hawks, 25-19, in the third quarter, the only period in which they did so.
