GAME RECAP

Rex Chapman scored Phoenix's final eight points -- all in the last 36 seconds -- as the Suns rallied for their sixth straight victory over the Orlando Magic, 96-94.

The Suns trailed 90-82 with 2:28 to go when two free throws by Danny Manning and one by Cliff Robinson cut the deficit to five. Robinson followed with a three-point play off an offensive rebound to draw Phoenix within 90-88 with 1:07 left.

After Penny Hardaway backed in Chapman and hit a jumper to put Orlando up by four with just under a minute to go, Phoenix's shooting guard took over. He drained a long three-pointer and rebounded a miss by Hardaway. Chapman was fouled on the play and hit two free throws with 13.6 seconds left to give Phoenix a 93-92 lead.

"They were overplaying me and Danny (Manning) set a screen for me," Chapman said of the three-pointer. "It was the third straight time we ran that play."

After a timeout, Orlando point guard Mark Price penetrated too far under the basket and was trapped. He threw a desperation pass that was tipped and headed for the right sideline. Just as it was about to go out of bounds, Magic guard Nick Anderson grabbed the ball and threw up a wild, twisting fadeaway that went in. But referee Dick Bavetta ruled that Anderson had his foot on the line and disallowed the basket.

Chapman, who made the go-ahead jumper in a 74-71 win at Miami on Friday, sank a pair of free throws with 4.8 seconds remaining to push the lead to 95-92. On the inbounds pass, Price was fouled with 2.5 seconds left and made the first. Instead of missing the second and giving Orlando a chance at a rebound, the best foul shooter in NBA history made the second.

Chapman then sealed the win with a free throw with seven-tenths of a second left.

"Like many games this season, we have been in position to win but could not close it out," said Magic coach Chuck Daly. "I told Bo Outlaw to tell Mark to miss the second free throw but I guess he didn't get him the message."

Robinson finished with 23 points and Jason Kidd added 15 and 11 assists for the Suns, who improved to 3-1 on their seven-game road trip.

"Rex has been making the shots all year," said Robinson. "I have come to expect that from him. But we have eight guys averaging in double figures so we have plenty of guys that can score."

Derek Strong scored 25 points for Orlando, which led by 16 points in the first half. Hardaway, playing in his second game since returning from a knee injury, added 11 but was just 5-of-18 from the floor.

The Magic fell to 9-11 at home and have not won consecutive games since Jan 10th-13th.

Antonio McDyess added nine rebounds for Phoenix, which led 26-10 just under 10 minutes into the contest. Kidd scored 13 points in the first quarter as the Suns made 11-of-19 shots from the field. Orlando was just 7-of-24 in the period.

The Suns led 43-28 midway through the second quarter but Orlando closed the period with a 17-7 burst, keyed by Strong and Horace Grant. Strong, who had 14 in the period, was 6-of-8 from the field in the first half.

Orlando drew within 50-49 early in the third quarter but Phoenix went on a 9-0 run. Robinson had five in the spurt, which was capped by Chapman's 15-footer with 9:24 left.

Anderson's three-pointer with 84 seconds left in the period got the Magic even for the first time in the second half, but George McCloud hit two free throws to give the Suns a lead heading into the fourth quarter.

A seven-footer by Anderson with 9:23 left gave the Magic their first lead of the game. The game remained tight until a tip by Strong with 4:16 ignited an 8-2 spurt that gave Orlando a 90-82 advantage.
