GAME RECAP

Larry Johnson fought back with a season-high 35 points and the New York Knicks converted 10 straight free throws down the stretch and defeated the rival Miami Heat, 89-83, to snap a three-game losing streak.

The bad blood continued to simmer between the Atlantic Division rivals, who were meeting for the second time in five days. The Heat defeated the Knicks, 86-82, in a chippy game at Miami on Wednesday night in the first meeting between the teams since last year's brutal Eastern Conference semifinal series, which saw Miami erase a 3-1 deficit following a brawl and mass suspensions in Game Five.

"He (Johnson) played a very good game," said Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy. "He made shots off the dribble, hit everything that he had open and made a lot of big shots for us."

Johnson, who was suspended from Game Seven of that series, was coming off a poor showing against Milwaukee on Thursday in which he was torched for 20 first-half points by Glenn Robinson before being ejected for arguing in the third quarter.

He nearly was ejected from this game as well, getting into a shoving match with Alonzo Mourning after he was flagrantly fouled by the Heat center on a drive in the second quarter. The former Charlotte Hornets teammates -- who are not close -- both received technical fouls.

"Alonzo really went for Larry's head and that's illegal," said Van Gundy. "There are certain things you have to stand up to. If you don't, you will get a reputation around the league for being soft. Miami was playing a very chippy game."

But Heat All-Star guard Tim Hardaway differed with Van Gundy's take of the incident.

"Alonzo was just trying to prevent Larry from making the basket," he said. "It was a good and smart play, but tempers flared."

As has been his practice for much of the season, Johnson did not speak to reporters after the game.

Johnson scored New York's first 11 points of the fourth quarter as the Knicks opened a 77-69 lead. But Miami scored the next eight points. Hardaway hit a pair of layups and two free throws and Mourning scored on a follow with 3:37 left to tie the game at 77-77.

A 12-foot jumper by Chris Childs with 3:25 remaining gave New York the lead for good. Allan Houston, Chris Dudley, Charles Oakley, Childs and John Starks then converted two free throws apiece in the final 77 seconds to seal the win.

Houston finished with 20 points. Dudley improved to 47 percent (37-of-79) from the line this season.

"This is a very big win for us under the circumstances," said Starks, who added 13 points off the bench. "We have two more before the All-Star break, so we didn't want to let the streak build any further. We needed this victory after the loss in Miami."

Mourning and Jamal Mashburn each scored 22 points for the Heat, whose division lead was reduced to 1 1/2 games over the second-place New Jersey Nets and two games over New York.

Hardaway, who scored 27 points Wednesday, added 17, but made just 4-of-14 shots from the field.

"It was a tough loss for us," said Hardaway. "The Knicks played very hard, knowing they wanted to break their losing streak."

Johnson and Houston each scored eight points in the first period. But despite hitting just 5-of-19 shots in the quarter, Miami trailed just 22-18.

A three-point play and a jumper by Isaac Austin sparked a 9-0 run which gave the Heat a 37-34 advantage with 4:23 left in the second quarter. But Johnson scored six points as the Knicks closed the half with an 11-4 spurt to take a 45-41 lead.

New York increased the lead to as much as 60-49 after Charlie Ward converted a pair of free throws with 5:22 left in the third quarter. But Mourning and Hardaway combined for eight points to spark an 11-0 run which tied the game at 64-64. The Knicks regained the lead on a short jumper by Oakley with six seconds left in the quarter.
