GAME RECAP

Isaiah Rider scored 24 of his team season-high 38 points over the second and third quarters and the Portland Trail Blazers left no room for doubt this time while posting a 97-90 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

Rider shot 15-of-25 from the field and added five rebounds and four assists. He keyed a pair of runs over the middle two quarters and hit a jumper and a late free throw that helped turn back late threats by the Raptors.

"We barely won," observed Rider. "It wasn't pretty, but we'll take it. I'm just trying to play ball and get some wins. I need to keep my head up and take the shots for us. We needed to take advantage. They couldn't guard me, so I had to try and exploit that."

The Blazers came away with a controversial 91-90 victory in Toronto on November 24th when Rasheed Wallace had a tip-in at the final buzzer. The shot was made possible only by an error by the clock operator, who mistakenly added 1 1/2 seconds to the game.

Rookie Alvin Williams had 13 points and Wallace collected 11, 11 rebounds and six assists for Portland, which committed 27 turnovers but shot 52 percent (39-of-75) from the field.

Portland native Damon Stoudamire made only 6-of-24 shots, finishing with 21 points and nine assists, and John Wallace added 20 points and nine rebounds off the bench for Toronto, which was outrebounded, 53-38. Stoudamire also had seven turnovers as the Raptors completed a 1-2 western road swing.

Stoudamire, a 43 percent shooter this season, connected on just 18-of-54 shots (33 percent) on the trip. The Raptors shot 36 percent (31-of-85), including a dismal 6-of-23 from behind the arc.

"We haven't hit any shots this entire trip," Stoudamire observed. "If you can't hit shots, it's hard to win. We've struggled this year and it is disappointing. We need to put this one behind us."

Walt Williams netted 18 points and Carlos Rogers 11 off the bench for Toronto. The duo combined to outscore starters Oliver Miller, Marcus Camby, Zan Tabak and Doug Christie by 11 points. Christie, matched up against Rider most of the way, tied his own team season high with seven steals.

After Tabak's only points of the game pulled the Raptors within 38-36 with 6:10 left in the second quarter, Rider touched off a 10-4 burst with a three-pointer. He scored eight points in the surge, which was capped at 54-40 on a bucket by Arvydas Sabonis.

Sabonis, who recorded his 21st double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds, also posted a pair of career firsts. He was hit with his first-ever technical in 183 games in the third quarter. Then, with 9:25 left to play, he earned another for arguing a foul call, resulting in the first ejection of his career.

"It's OK, it's my fault," said Sabonis. "I don't need to do this like I do, you know. I never talk with referees, so I haven't had any problems in the past. I don't know, where were the fouls? If the last foul was really mine, OK."

"We had a mismatch in the post late (with the ejection), but we couldn't knock down our shots," said Toronto coach Darrell Walker. "When our shooting game is off, we have a tough time. We have to shoot the basketball offensively. We have no post game."

The Raptors used a 13-3 run and sliced the margin to 60-54 on a three-pointer by Williams with 3:45 remaining in the third, but a lay-in by Portland's Alvin Williams ignited a 10-4 spurt that was capped at 70-58 on a layup by Rider with 63 seconds left.

Toronto scratched its way again in the fourth, narrowing the gap to 81-76 on a jumper by Stoudamire that Rider followed with a basket. The Raptors got within five twice more but a jumper by Williams and Rider's free throw allowed them no closer.
