GAME RECAP

Reggie Miller scored 20 points and atoned for a late turnover by hitting a decisive three-pointer with 13 seconds to play as the Indiana Pacers matched their longest winning streak of the season with a 99-92 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Indiana, which has won six straight games and 11 of 12, led by as many as 14 points in the final period, but the Clippers pulled within 96-92 with 1:08 to play on a dunk by Rodney Rogers.

Miller threw away a pass and Los Angeles had a chance to further trim the deficit, but Derrick McKey stole the ball from Rogers. Miller made that defensive effort pay off as he secured the victory by draining a crucial three-pointer, his only basket of the fourth quarter.

"It should not come down to my shot to decide the game," Miller said. "We kind of relaxed and you can not do that against a good offensive team like the Clippers."

Rik Smits had 23 points and eight rebounds for the Pacers, who recorded their third six-game winning streak of the season and won for the sixth time in seven road games.

"I didn't feel we played our best tonight, but we got the win," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "I've felt we could score the majority of our possessions. Our problem was whether we could stop the other team from scoring."

"We're playing with a lot of enthusiasm," Smits said. "Our coaches have instilled a lot of confidence in us, and Larry lets us play. No one is looking down the bench all the time."

Rogers had 19 points and 11 rebounds and Lorenzen Wright added 10 and 17 boards for the Clippers, who have lost 10 in a row against Indiana. Los Angeles has not won in this series since December 13th, 1992.

Jalen Rose scored 16 points and hit a fast-break layup to put the Pacers ahead to stay, 38-36, with 7:56 left in the second quarter. An 18-footer by Smits built the lead to 55-48 and, after Rogers answered with a layup, Smits buried a hook shot to give Indiana a 57-50 halftime lead.

"Smits was unstoppable," Rogers said. "He's six or seven inches taller than most of us and he's got long arms. He just found a number of ways to score against us. He's a heckuva player."

Mark Jackson handed out one of his nine assists when he fed Dale Davis for a fast-break dunk early in the third period, and Smits followed with a six-footer to increase the lead to 64-52. Miller's layup with 3:42 remaining created a 74-60 cushion, but rookie Maurice Taylor sank two free throws with 30 seconds left to pull the Clippers within 81-70 heading into the fourth.

Rogers hit back-to-back inside buckets to cut the deficit to 91-85 until Smits responded with a free throw. Darrick Martin hit a foul shot thanks to an illegal defense call on the Pacers and Rogers hit a layup on the break to make it 92-88.

After Smits and James Robinson traded pairs of foul shots, Wright missed two from the line and Davis hit a follow shot to increase Indiana's advantage to 96-90 with 1:20 remaining.

Eric Piatkowski scored 15 points and Taylor added 14 for the Clippers, who have lost eight straight games and 12 of 13. Los Angeles, which has lost five in a row at home, shot 39 percent (32-of-81) and were outscored in the paint, 50-28.

"What can we say? We fought hard," Taylor said. "This is a veteran team by the way they played in the fourth quarter."

Indiana, which scored 27 points off 15 Clipper turnovers, has held its last five opponents to just 39.6 percent from the field.
