GAME RECAP

Rod Strickland had 26 points and 10 assists and Chris Webber added 23 points and 12 rebounds as the Washington Wizards spoiled Alvin Gentry's Detroit coaching debut with a 113-101 victory over the Pistons.

Gentry replaced Doug Collins, fired earlier in the day with a disappointing 21-24 record. Collins, who won 100 games in his first two seasons while leading the Pistons to consecutive playoff berths, was dismissed with the team tied for 11th in the 15-team Eastern Conference.

This is Gentry's second stint as an NBA head coach. During the 1994-95 season, he took over the Miami Heat after Kevin Loughery was fired. Gentry's record in 36 games with the Heat was 15-21.

Juwan Howard added 17 points, nine boards and nine assists and Tracy Murray had 16 points for the Wizards, who improved to 14-4 at the MCI Center. The 113 points were the most allowed by Detroit this season.

"For once we dictated how the game was played," Howard said. "We played tough defense the whole game. The last time we played (a 102-95 win at Detroit on Friday) we allowed them back into it. Tonight we didn't let up and kept the pressure on them. We had a lot of scoring opportunities that we took advantage of."

Jerry Stackhouse scored 22 points and Grant Hill had 16 and 10 rebounds for Detroit, which lost for the fifth time in six games.

"It was awful," Gentry said. "This was the worst defense we've played in three years. That's not being negative, that's just the facts. We're going to have to have a better effort from everyone. I'm just disappointed in our defensive effort.

"The thing about it is that as poorly as things were going, we still had a chance to get into the game. But that was not meant to be."

Each team pulled down 41 rebounds but the Wizards outshot the Pistons 53 percent (49-for-92) to 42 percent (33-for-79).

"Sometimes the ball doesn't go into the hoop but you don't look for excuses," said Detroit's Lindsey Hunter, who had 16 points. "We just did not play well tonight. There was no energy out there. The game got out of hand real early."

Detroit grabbed its last lead at the 5:53 mark of the first quarter, 16-14, after Hunter made a layup. The game was tied, 18-18, when Brian Williams hit a layup 63 seconds later, but Washington grabbed the lead for good with 4:23 left in the quarter on a driving dunk by Terry Davis.

The dunk started a 7-0 spurt which was capped by Murray's layup, making it 25-18. A jumper by Stackhouse cut the margin to five before the Wizards closed the quarter with a 15-2 run. Strickland's layup at the buzzer gave Washington a 35-20 bulge.

Strickland and Murray each contributed five points during the burst as Washington had its highest-scoring first quarter of the season.

The Wizards built the lead to 19 three times in the second quarter, the last at 55-36 on a driving layup by Webber with 6:01 remaining.

Detroit shaved Washington's lead to 63-50 at halftime and pulled within 88-79 at the 10:29 mark of the fourth quarter on Hunter's layup.

The Wizards responded with a 9-1 run and Howard's jumper gave them their biggest lead of the second half, 97-80, with 7:49 remaining.

"I thought we had patience tonight," Washington coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. "If you get the ball to the right people you can score. I'm proud of this team because they're showing me that they want to win. The intent is there as a team."

Webber strained his right shoulder and left midway through the fourth quarter. He is listed as day-to-day.
