GAME RECAP

Vernon Maxwell scored 15 points in his debut with the Charlotte Hornets, including a go-ahead three-pointer with under a minute remaining, in a 98-89 victory over the Boston Celtics.

The Hornets led 67-65 after three quarters and the score remained tight throughout the fourth period until Charlotte moved ahead 86-82 on former Celtic David Wesley's free throw with 2:38 to play. But Antoine Walker made a layup, Dana Barros hit a foul shot and Walker added one from the line with 79 seconds left to tie it.

Maxwell re-entered the game following a timeout and immediately snapped the tie by drilling a three-pointer with 55 seconds remaining. After Walker missed a three-pointer, Glen Rice was fouled and converted both free throws to make it 91-86 with 40 seconds to go.

"Matt (Geiger) was dribbling towards me at the end, so I was really just a decoy," said Maxwell about his three-pointer. "I ran and got the ball, looked up at the shot and took it. I saw the shot clock at five and said to myself that I have to do something."

Dee Brown answered with a three-pointer 19 seconds later to cut the gap to two points before Charlotte avoided getting fouled and found Maxwell for an easy layup with 11 seconds left.

"I played my whole career taking big shots," added Maxwell, who played 27 minutes after signing a 10-day contract earlier in the day. "I have been in all kinds of situations and there was no reason for me to be nervous. I am just trying to go out, play hard, be aggressive and make plays."

Matt Geiger tallied 24 points and Wesley added 15 for Charlotte, which has won five of its last six games overall and four of five at home. Anthony Mason chipped in nine points, 11 rebounds and nine assists.

"I told Vernon Maxwell to come out and be aggressive tonight," said Hornets coach Dave Cowens. "He is the type of player that pressure doesn't seem to bother. He is an athlete and he can make things happen. He was the hero tonight."

Walker collected 23 points and 16 boards for Boston, which has dropped seven of its last eight road games. The Celtics lost the season series, 2-1, and have dropped four in a row at Charlotte.

Charlotte held an early 11-9 lead before Walker's layup with 6:37 left in the first quarter tipped off a 20-4 run. Barros scored five points in the burst, including a jumper that capped it 56 seconds into the second period and gave Boston its largest lead at 29-15.

The Hornets responded with a 21-8 spurt that featured 12 points from Geiger and a jumper by Rice with 3:24 left in the half that cut the deficit to 37-36. Geiger and Wesley combined for 27 points at the break as Charlotte led, 44-43.

"We stopped being aggressive in the second quarter," said Brown. "We became stagnant, of sorts. They are going to play physical because that is their game. We knew what we were doing. It is called organized chaos."

Rice contributed 14 points for the depleted Hornets, who have guards Bobby Phills and Dell Curry on the injured list and guard Corey Beck sidelined with a pulled left groin.

"They were all over me tonight," said Rice, who averaged 22.2 points entering the game. "It is a good thing that we had guys who could get it done. It is not easy when you have guys hanging all over you. It is difficult and it gets frustrating."

Brown netted 20 points and Barros had 14 off the bench for Boston, which shot just 39 percent (32-of-83) from the floor, including 7-for-25 from three-point range. Starting rookie guard Ron Mercer did not travel due to a stomach virus.

"In the first quarter we played good basketball, but Charlotte came back in the second quarter," said Celtics coach Rick Pitino. "We worked hard defensively, but we can't keep turning the ball over like we did. When we shoot 38 percent, we put ourselves in a hole."
