GAME RECAP

Tracy Murray poured in a career and league season-high 50 points and Rod Strickland added his third career triple-double as the depleted Washington Wizards handed the Golden State Warriors their fifth straight loss, 99-87.

Washington was playing without injured forwards Chris Webber and Juwan Howard -- its two leading scorers -- but the performances of Murray and Strickland more than made up for it. Murray shot 18-of-29 from the field, including 5-of-10 from three-point range, surpassing 49-point efforts by Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls and Antoine Walker of the Boston Celtics.

"They were just falling in," said Murray, who once scored 64 points in this building in a high school game. "It was really a team effort. I felt everybody had to come in and I don't know why they went in. In fact, I missed my first three shots. But then everything fell into place."

Strickland scored 21 points, a career high-tying 20 assists and career-best 12 rebounds for the Wizards, who defeated Golden State for the fourth straight time.

"We were never able to get control over Rod or Tracy," Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "Calbert (Cheaney) hurt us at times also. Rod's penetration was a problem whether it was on the break, in the halfcourt, or on the pick-and-roll. There were too many times where we didn't stay home on Tracy."

Joe Smith collected a season-high 36 points and nine rebounds for the Warriors, who have dropped 19 of their last 20 games. They have also dropped 10 in a row at home.

Murray scored 16 points in the first quarter, but Washington was only able to open a 30-26 lead. The Warriors fought back, going ahead for the final time at 38-37 on Smith's jumper with 5:55 remaining in the second. Golden State remained close, trailing by one point until Washington used a 12-4 surge to take a 60-51 halftime edge.

Murray ignited the spurt with a three-pointer and added a dunk. Calbert Cheaney contributed a layup and capped the spurt with a three-point play.

Erick Dampier's layup brought Golden State within 66-64 with 4:42 left in the third quarter before Cheaney fueled a 7-0 run. After hitting a free throw, he knocked down jumpers of 20 and 17 feet for a 71-64 advantage. Murray continued the barrage from outside, capping the run with a jumper for a 73-64 advantage.

The fourth quarter was all Murray's. He scored the first six points of the period for an 81-68 cushion with 10:53 to play. He netted 17 points in the period as the Wizards did not allow the Warriors closer than 11 points the remainder of the game.

Murray sank a pair of free throws with 2:12 to play for a 98-80 lead. Those foul shots gave him 50 points, the first time that number had been reached in the NBA since Philadelphia's Allen Iverson had 50 against the Cleveland Cavaliers last April 12th.

Cheaney finished with 18 points before fouling out for Washington, which shot 41 percent (37-of-91) from the field. The rest of the Wizards combined for just three assists.

Tony Delk had 14 points and 11 assists, Donyell Marshall had 12 points and Dampier had 11 and 11 rebounds for the Warriors, who shot 44 percent (36-of-82).
