GAME RECAP

Johnny Newman led five double-figure scorers by exploding for a season-high 34 points off the bench and the Denver Nuggets held the lead for almost the entire game, posting a rare 112-99 victory over the Boston Celtics.

Newman, whose previous season-high was 32 points against Houston on December 2nd, shot 9-of-13 from the field and was 15-of-18 from the free throw line. He had 20 points in the fourth quarter, hitting 14-of-16 free throws, tying the NBA record for free throws attempted and made in a quarter.

"We were struggling during the first half of the season," Newman said. "It was a good (All-Star) break and we came back with a lot of energy and a good attitude. We had a mix of set plays and fast breaks and it was a lot of fun. We did a good job attacking their press.

"Everybody was excited in the locker room and we want to get used to this. We have to do it on a more consistent basis."

The last NBA player to make 14 free throws in a quarter was Chicago's Michael Jordan, against Miami on December 30th, 1992. The last NBA player to attempt 16 free throws in a quarter was Philadelphia's Willie Burton, against Miami on December 13th, 1994.

LaPhonso Ellis and Anthony Goldwire chipped in with 19 points apiece for the Nuggets, who have gone 3-4 over their last seven games since ending their record-tying 23-game losing streak. Tony Battie added 10 rebounds and a season-high eight blocks, and Bobby Jackson registered a season-high 14 assists as the Nuggets avenged a 96-86 loss in Boston on November 12th and won at home for the fourth time in 24 games.

"Battie had his best game of the season, Newman played great and Ellis carried us for a stretch," Denver coach Bill Hanzlik said. "Goldwire also played really well, getting us under control and attacking the press at the right times. It's nice to have a lot of guys have nice games."

Ron Mercer scored 19 points and Chauncey Billups 15 for the Celtics, who have dropped eight of their last nine games on the road and are 6-16 overall away from home. It was Boston's first stop on an eight-game, 12-day West Coast road trip. Antoine Walker had nine rebounds but only 10 points on 5-for-22 shooting.

Boston held a slim 46-45 rebounding edge and shot 73 percent (30-for-41) from the line to Denver's 83 percent (33-for-40), but the Nuggets connected on a season-high 60 percent (37-for-62) of their field goal attempts while the Celtics shot only 34 percent (33-for-97) from the field. Boston was just 3-for-15 from three-point range while Denver was 5-for-10.

"Give credit to them, they played very well and very hard," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "We can lose to anyone or we can beat anyone. We are a shot-selection away from being a good team. It comes down to them shooting 60 percent and us shooting 34 percent.

"I'd like to believe we would know what is a good shot and what a bad shot is at this point of the season. They moved the ball and we took poor shots. The shots we were taking were 34 percent shots."

After Walker hit a hook shot to give Boston a 4-2 edge 1:50 into the game, Denver went on a 17-2 run to take control. Ellis had eight points during the spurt and Eric Washington capped it off with a dunk at the 5:55 mark, making it 19-6.

Boston got to within five points seven different times in the second quarter, but a three-pointer by Goldwire with four seconds left in the half built Denver's lead back to 10 points, 48-38.

The Celtics stayed within nine points in the third quarter, before the Nuggets stretched their lead to as much as 18, following an 18-footer by Newman with 2:11 left, giving Denver a 75-57 lead.

Denver's lead ballooned to 91-68 with 8:45 to go, after a single free throw by Danny Fortson. The closest Boston came down the stretch was 109-97 off a layup by Billups with under one minute remaining.
