GAME RECAP

Michael Jordan scored 29 points, including the go-ahead free throw and a key layup down the stretch, as the Chicago Bulls moved over the .500 mark on the road with a 92-90 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

Apparently recovered from a flu bug that stayed with him through All-Star Weekend, Jordan hit 11-of-22 shots from the field. He made a foul shot to give the Bulls an 88-87 edge with 1:12 left and, after the Hornets failed to score on the next possession, Jordan made a reverse layup for a 90-87 advantage with 36 seconds to go.

Matt Geiger coverted a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 90-89 with 20 seconds left. Toni Kukoc was fouled by Vernon Maxwell with three seconds remaining and sank both free throws for Chicago's final points.

Ron Harper immediately fouled Glen Rice, who hit the first free throw to make it 92-90. Rice intentionally missed the second attempt and the rebound went to Maxwell, whose three-pointer from the left wing hit the backboard and front rim before falling out.

"I thought we had a good look at the game-winner," Charlotte coach Dave Cowens said. "It just didn't fall though. We got Glen the ball right at the basket and he got sandwiched. Once Glen hits a shot, he starts believing in himself again. A lot of it is mental. Maxwell is giving us good energy. He can make things happen and he handles the ball well. However, he was 1-for-7 for us tonight."

Rice scored 29 points and David Wesley added 18 for Charlotte, which lost three of four meetings to the Bulls this season. Anthony Mason, who posted $20,000 bond Sunday following his arraignment on third-degree rape charges, contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.

Scottie Pippen had 23 points and six assists and Harper added 12 points for the Bulls, who improved to 14-13 on the road. Dennis Rodman grabbed 11 rebounds as the Bulls remained a half-game behind Indiana for the lead in the Central Division.

"We need to learn to pick things up or something when we have teams trailing us by so much," Rodman said. "We simply must play better down the stretch."

Pippen scored 12 points in the first period as the Bulls took a 30-20 advantage. Pippen had seven points in a 15-2 burst that he capped with a three-point play, giving the Bulls their biggest lead of the game, 35-20, with 11:23 left in the second quarter. Jordan had 20 points in the first half as Chicago took a 51-42 advantage into the break.

"We jumped on this team early in the first half," Pippen said. "We were up 15 or so points. Somehow they were able to get back into the game. I guess give Charlotte credit for coming back from our run. We knew this was going to be a tough team to come in here and play on the road."

Donald Royal capped a 10-2 burst with a pair of free throws to give Charlotte its first lead of the game, 53-52, with 8:27 left in the third quarter. Wesley had six points in the run. Jordan was held scoreless in the period but the Bulls maintained a 66-62 lead.

"We played lethargic in the third quarter," Chicago coach Phil Jackson said. "The third quarters have been a problem lately. Things happened on the offensive end that I was not too happy about. Charlotte certainly had something to do with that. We had fatigue trouble with both Scottie and Michael."

J.R. Reid, who had five points and six rebounds off the bench, capped a 10-4 surge with a jumper to give Charlotte a 72-70 lead with nine minutes remaining.

Chicago answered with seven straight points, taking a 77-72 lead on Kukoc's three-pointer with 7:18 to go. Rookie Travis Williams answered with a layup to pull the Hornets within 77-74 and the Bulls did not build bigger than a six-point lead thereafter.
