GAME RECAP

Nick Anderson continued his recent resurgence with a season-high 28 points and 11 rebounds and the Orlando Magic held the Minnesota Timberwolves to their worst first half of the season in a 96-89 victory.

Anderson came into the contest averaging just 8.2 points per game, but has netted 20.7 per game over his last three games. His layup 34 seconds into the game gave the Magic a 2-1 lead and they never trailed thereafter.

Bo Outlaw added 14 points and 12 rebounds and Horace Grant also had 14 points for Orlando, which played without All-Star guard Penny Hardaway for the 32nd time in 50 games this season. Hardaway suffered a deep muscle bruise behind his left knee in Tuesday's 85-66 loss at Indiana.

"It's a miracle win, just a miracle after last night," Orlando coach Chuck Daly said. "Nick Anderson is bionic. Horace Grant played well. Every win is a sweet win. A little unexpected after last night."

Kevin Garnett had 29 points and 12 rebounds for the Wolves, who set season lows with 15 first-quarter points and 35 in the first half. Minnesota trailed 44-35 at halftime.

Despite their horrible first half, the Wolves were down just 70-68 after Garnett dunked with 8:29 left in the fourth quarter. But Orlando answered with a 9-0 run as Grant knocked down a 15-footer, Anderson buried a three-pointer and Derek Harper hit consecutive layups for a 79-68 lead with 5:29 remaining.

Terry Porter ended that run with a jumper, but Harper scored again to ignite a 9-2 burst. Outlaw had three points before Derek Strong scored the final four points inside for an 88-72 bulge with 2:09 to play.

A 10-1 run pulled Minnesota within 89-82 after a three-pointer by Porter with just over a minute left, but Outlaw dunked and Strong sank two foul shots to push the lead back to double digits with 41 seconds to go.

Playing again without injured forward Tom Gugliotta, the Wolves slept through the first 24 minutes. They fell behind 12-3 halfway into the period and trailed 20-15 at the end of the quarter as Anderson scored eight points. Harper scored seven points in the second quarter to push the lead to nine points at the break.

"You sit back and look at things," Garnett said. "In the first quarter you look like crap. It's tough coming back after the break. We had two practices where we ran hard. It's all about us getting into sync. We have to get back to playing Minnesota basketball."

Anderson was scoreless in the second quarter but came out hot in the third period. He scored five quick points in a 9-1 burst to open the session and the Magic took their largest lead at 53-36 on Grant's 17-footer with 9:07 remaining in the quarter.

Anderson also said that Orlando needs to keep Hardaway, who earlier today was reportedly to be traded to New Jersey in a three-way trade that would send Toronto guard Damon Stoudamire to Orlando.

"There is nobody out here that will replace Penny Hardaway," he said. "Damon Stoudamire is a great player but I need Penny Hardaway. I can't see myself out there with anybody else but number 1. There is no way I want to play with anybody else."

Harper finished with 14 points and became the 10th player in NBA history with 1,000 three-pointers. Strong added 13 points as the Magic shot 45 percent (34-of-75) from the field and held a 48-41 rebounding edge.

Porter had 18 points for Minnesota, but Stephon Marbury, who had averaged 27.2 points in the last five games, was just 5-of-21 for 13 points. The Wolves shot 39 percent and also had season lows with 13 free throws attempted and 10 made.
