GAME RECAP

Clyde Drexler scored 25 points and Matt Maloney added a career-high 24 as the Houston Rockets scored nine straight points down the stretch, rallying for a 112-103 victory over the reeling Vancouver Grizzlies.

Trailing 97-96 with 3:51 remaining, Houston went ahead for good on a 15-footer by Hakeem Olajuwon. Drexler sank a layup and Maloney converted a three-point play before Olajuown, who finished with 22 points, stroked a 14-footer to cap the burst with 1:57 to go.

"I thought it was a good game defensively," said Maloney, who connected on 10-of-17 shots from the field and dished out six assists. "We didn't follow our gameplan in the first half. We gave them too many open shots. The effort we put up in the second half really showed some character."

Houston, which trailed by seven points at halftime before taking a brief lead late in the third quarter, held the Grizzlies to one field goal over the final 5:16 in posting back-to-back wins for the first time in 1998.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim netted 16 points and Antonio Daniels contributed 15 and nine assists for Vancouver, which has lost seven in a row and 20 of its last 23 games.

"We gave them the game, it was ours to win," said Abdur-Rahim. "We didn't execute offensively or defensively and we never got any second shots. We had control of this game basically to the end and I'm very disappointed in the loss."

Coming off the bench for the second straight game, Charles Barkley finished with eight points and 11 rebounds for Houston, which committed just 10 turnovers while forcing 20 that it turned into 32 points.

"I thought our defense caused most of the turnovers that led to easy baskets," said Drexler, who added 10 assists. "I thought that was the difference in the game. They're a good young team and they played well for 36 minutes."

Kevin Willis and Mario Elie chipped in with nine points apiece, with Elie did his damage in 22 minutes before leaving with a sprained left ankle in the third quarter.

Daniels and Bryant Reeves each had 10 points in the first half as the Grizzlies forged a 61-54 lead. They led by as many as nine on a 15-footer by Daniels at the 10:56 mark of the third quarter before the Rockets roared back. Trailing 70-62, Houston used an 11-2 run that was capped by Drexler's fast-break dunk to grab a 73-72 edge with 4:53 to play.

Leading 83-82 after Houston's Eddie Johnson stroked a jumper to start the fourth quarter, Vancouver started pulling away. Lee Mayberry drained a three-pointer and George Lynch nailed a jumper as Vancouver grabbed an 88-82 advantage with 10:18 left.

The cushion was short-lived, however, as the Rockets weathered the storm and answered with an 8-2 run, pulling even at 90-90 on two free throws by Olajuwon. Vancouver was able to forge a 96-92 lead when former Rocket Otis Thorpe sank a pair from the line, but Houston scored 20 of the last 27 points to post consecutive wins for the first time since December 16th-19th.

Blue Edwards netted 13 and Lynch 12 for the Grizzlies, who managed to lose despite shooting 53 percent (39-of-73) from the field and sinking 20-of-22 from the line, including 18 in a row.
