GAME RECAP

Stephon Marbury scored 22 points and Kevin Garnett added 21 and 11 rebounds as the undermanned Minnesota Timberwolves routed the lifeless Denver Nuggets, 107-80.

Minnesota took charge quickly, jumping out to a 19-5 lead with 3:58 to play in the first quarter. The Timberwolves never trailed and led by as many as 29 in the final minute.

"We kept good focus," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "The main thing is we were aggressive defensively. We were more aggressive and took them out of things. Our halfcourt trap was going pretty good. That's what we need without (Minnesota forward Tom) Gugliotta and everyone contributed."

Gugliotta missed his fifth straight game with a sore right ankle. He will be re-evaluated on Monday. Guard Doug West left the game with 5:39 to play in the third quarter when he suffered lower back contusions after colliding with Denver forward Danny Fortson.

Anthony Goldwire and LaPhonso Ellis each had 16 points and Ellis and former Timberwolve Dean Garrett recorded 14 rebounds apiece for Denver, which suffered its sixth loss of at least 25 points this season.

"Our effort was obviously not good enough," Nuggets coach Bill Hanzlik said. "We tried to compete, but it is tough when you can't hit the shots. Minnesota is a good team. They mix what they do a lot."

The Nuggets, who beat Minnesota to snap a season-opening 12-game losing streak, fell to 3-6 following their NBA record-tying 23-game losing streak. They are also winless (0-22) when allowing more than 100 points this season.

"We just made sure everyone was on the same page," Garnett said. "Last time we took them too lightly. Playing without Guggs is a challenge. It forced Stephon and I to raise our game to a new level."

The Timberwolves scoring output had decreased in each of their last five games. But Minnesota left little doubt about the outcome of this contest.

With the score tied, 2-2, Marbury assisted on four straight baskets -- two by Garnett -- as the Wolves took a 10-2 lead with 7:45 remaining.

"Our team has an identity now and everyone has respect for our game," Marbury said. "Playing without Gugliotta is a challenge for me and (Kevin Garnett). It's killing me with Guggs not playing, but I am happy that Kevin and I can step up and play like money players. We've got to keep playing and get used to each other. It's easier for me to keep my focus. I start to focus as soon as I get on the bus."

Garrett nailed a 13-footer to temporarily halt the run and draw Denver within six. But Garnett sank two free throws and Marbury fed West for a 16-foot jumper to restore the 10-point cushion with 5:51 left.

Garrett responded by hitting one of two free throws before Marbury drained a three-pointer and fed West for a slam dunk as the Wolves opened up a 19-5 cushion.

Marbury handed out six of his nine assists in the first quarter. The Wolves shot 52 percent (12-of-23) in the opening quarter en route to a 27-20 lead.

A three-pointer by Goldwire drew Denver within six, 41-35, with 5:24 left in the half. But Minnesota answered with another 8-0 run to make it 49-35 with less than three minutes to play.
