GAME RECAP

Antoine Walker had 28 points and 13 rebounds and made one free throw with 16.1 seconds left as the Boston Celtics overcame poor foul shooting in the final minute to hold off the Los Angeles Clippers, 97-96.

Chauncey Billups added 21 points and Dee Brown 12 for the Celtics, who nearly blew the game by missing 4-of-6 from the line in the final 46 seconds.

Lamond Murray scored 20 points and Maurice Taylor contributed 17 for the Clippers, who have dropped three in a row and 11 of their last 12 games. Los Angeles had a chance to win but James Robinson missed a turnaround jumper with under two seconds. Taylor grabbed the rebound but was unable to get off a shot before the buzzer sounded.

"With the exception of missing free throws in the fourth quarter, I thought we played well," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "We are a young scrapping team that has only won six games on the road. We'll take a one-point win anytime, it was a great win for us.'

Boston opened the fourth quarter with a 9-2 surge to open an 84-74 lead on a jumper by Bruce Bowen with 8:42 to play. The lead was still 10 before Taylor and Robinson each sank a pair of free throws to bring the Clippers within 92-86 and ignite a 10-1 burst.

Taylor dunked to slice the deficit to 93-90 with 2:39 to go and Robinson followed with a pair of foul shots to get within one. Billups answered with two free throws, but Boston then began to struggle from the stripe.

After Murray's follow again got Los Angeles within one, Billups made one free throw for a 96-94 edge with 46 seconds to play. The Celtics forced Robinson to turn it over, but could not capitalize as Brown missed both free throws.

Lorenzen Wright grabbed the rebound of the second miss and was fouled, making both to forge a 96-96 tie with 31 seconds to go. Boston again left the door open when Walker could only make the second of two after he was fouled while attempting a putback. But the Celtics pressured the Clippers into Robinson's difficult shot.

"(Darrick) Martin could have gotten it, Lamond could have gotten it, you've got three guys out there," Clippers coach Bill Fitch said of the final shot. "But you saw the pressure they put on the inbounds pass. I like the guy who got it. That shot may have been the best thing going for us, but it didn't work."

The Clippers used a 30-point second quarter to open a 52-46 halftime lead. They opened their largest lead at 62-53 with 8:34 left in the third after Martin buried a three-pointer and Eric Piatkowski sank two free throws. But Boston scored 22 of the final 32 points of the period and fought back to grab a 72-70 lead when Dana Barros drilled a three-pointer wit 1:25 left in the quarter. The Celtics led, 75-72, entering the fourth.

Barros and Ron Mercer scored 11 points apiece for the Celtics, who shot 43 percent (36-of-83) from the field. Walker, who had made just 11-of-40 shots while averaging 12.5 points in the first two games of Boston's eight-game road trip, was 9-of-21 tonight.

Wright totaled 16 points and 17 rebounds and Robinson and Martin added 13 points apiece for the Clippers, who shot 40.5 percent (30-of-74) and committed 20 turnovers.

Forward Rodney Rogers, the Clippers' leading scorer, suffered a sprained right ankle in the fourth quarter and was taken for X-rays after the game. He is listed as day-to-day.
