GAME RECAP

Alonzo Mourning had 39 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocked shots as the Miami Heat continued their recent dominance over the Detroit Pistons with a 100-86 victory.

Mourning's 39 points -- on 13-of-18 shooting -- were his most since scoring a career-high 50 in a 112-93 victory over Washington on March 29th, 1996.

The win was costly as Miami lost forward Jamal Mashburn indefinitely with a fractured right thumb. Mashburn had 11 points but left the game with 7:28 to go in the second period when he landed hard on his right wrist after going up for a dunk.

"He's broken it, it's a pretty serious injury," said Miami coach Pat Riley. "We'll know more about it tonight when a hand specialist takes a look at it. He's probably going to have surgery. What we lose with Jamal is that he's been playing his best basketball in the last month. He's been focused, very versatile and doing a great job defensively. He's a key component to our team."

Tim Hardaway had 22 points and six assists as the Heat defeated the Pistons for the eighth straight time. Hardaway shot 7-for-11, including 5-for-7 from three-point range and his 101 three-pointers are 12 behind Cleveland's Wesley Person for the NBA lead. The Heat have won five of their last six games and remain three games ahead of the New Jersey Nets, who beat Toronto.

"I'm comfortable with the three-point shot," Hardaway said. "They should know better then to give me room."

Grant Hill scored 22 points and Joe Dumars added 16 for the Pistons, who have not beaten the Heat since December 22nd, 1995. Detroit shot just 36 percent (30-for-83) from the floor and fell to 2-2 since Alvin Gentry took over for the fired Doug Collins. Jerry Stackhouse scored 15 points off the bench but shot just 4-of-14 from the floor. Brian Williams had 14 points and 16 boards for the Pistons, who outrebounded Miami, 49-43.

"Alonzo Mourning dominated the game," Gentry said. "We wanted to go inside and challenge him and he met the challenge. He just ended up blocking our shots. He had a terrific game. Tim Hardaway, I truly believe, is the best point guard in the NBA. If he's not the best guard, then he's the best clutch shooter. They take you out of what you want to do. We ended up shooting 36 percent. We outrebounded them, but we just didn't shoot the ball very well."

The Heat led the entire way and Mourning had 12 points in the first period for a 29-17 lead. Stackhouse hit a pair of free throws to cap a 6-0 spurt and pull the Pistons within 40-37 with 1:19 left in the second quarter.

Williams converted two free throws to cut Miami's lead to 44-43 with 10:47 left in the third. But Mourning answered with a 13-footer for a three-point lead 29 seconds later. Mourning and Hardaway combined for a 7-0 spurt that gave the Heat a 68-56 advantage following Mourning's free throw with 2:57 left in the third.

The lead did not fall below 10 points in the fourth and Miami had its biggest advantage at 96-76 when Mourning's jumper capped a 7-0 burst with 1:58 to go.
