GAME RECAP

Allan Houston scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half and the New York Knicks capitalized on a pivotal third-quarter run en route to a 99-83 victory over the Orlando Magic.

Larry Johnson scored 19 points and Chris Mills added 15 for the Knicks, who improved to 3-0 against the Magic this season and have beaten them four straight times.

Bo Outlaw and reserve Danny Schayes each scored 18 points for the Magic, who dropped to 11-12 at home and lost for the seventh time in their last 11 home games.

Orlando guard Penny Hardaway, the subject of recent trade rumors, scored only two points, missing all five of his shots in 24 minutes. Hardaway missed Wednesday's game at Minnesota with a bruised left calf.

"My calf is still hurting, it keeps giving me problems," Hardaway said. "I said before, I'm trying to play through the pain, but obviously it still hurts."

New York's Chris Childs talked about Hardaway's injury.

"It wasn't me against Hardaway," Childs said. "It was Hardaway against himself. He is injured. It is different when you are hurt, because you can still go out there. But he is injured. He shouldn't even be out there on the court."

The Knicks held a 22-20 lead after one quarter, but Orlando started the second period by scoring the first eight points, capped by Horace Grant's layup for a 28-22 lead with 9:38 remaining.

New York took control from there, responding with an 8-0 run, taking the lead for good at 30-28 on Charles Oakley's jumper with 7:58 to play before intermission. New York led 48-42 at the break.

Oakley hit a jumper with 10:04 left in the third which gave the Knicks a 50-42 advantage and fueled a 16-2 spurt. Charlie Ward capped the burst with a layup that pushed the lead to 64-44 with 4:13 left in the quarter. Houston was the key contributor in the run with five points.

"In the third quarter we got out and built the lead up," Oakley said. "They had to work to get back in the game. We are glad to get the win after the All-Star break."

Houston, who scored 10 points in the third, hit a runner in the lane that gave New York its biggest lead at 72-50 with 1:45 left in the third. The Knicks held a 75-56 lead after three quarters and Orlando got no closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

"We brought a lot energy," Houston said. "We have lately tried to come out in the third strong. We may miss some shots but aslong as you nring energy and try and make a defensive stand, I think that is what you have to do."

Johnson connected on 9-of-14 shots, while Houston hit on 9-of-16 attempts for the Knicks, who shot 57 percent (38-of-67). Orlando shot only 38 percent (29-of-77).
