GAME RECAP

Bryant Reeves had 22 points and 12 rebounds and Shareef Abdur-Rahim added 21 and 12 as the Vancouver Grizzlies matched last season's win total with a 110-108 overtime victory over the Washington Wizards.

Blue Edwards scored 20 points in 25 minutes off the bench and rookie Antonio Daniels tallied 13 points and eight assists for Vancouver (14-37), which is one win from matching its franchise-best victory total set in its inaugural season of 1995-96. Sam Mack contributed 13 points as the Grizzlies set a franchise record with 111 field-goal attempts, making 46 for 41 percent. Otis Thorpe came off the bench for the first time this season and had eight points and six rebounds.

"I just decided to make a change," said Vancouver coach Brian Hill about Thorpe coming off the bench. "My wife told me to change the lineup tonight. It's Valentine's Day, I had to do what she said."

"It's strange, I was thinking abiout something driving in, I had my heart broken once before on this day and that's when I got traded from Houston to Portland," Thorpe said. "I guess this is another one that I'll kind of remember also."

Calbert Cheaney drained a three-pointer from well beyond the top of the key to cut Vancouver's lead to 108-107 with 7.9 seconds remaining. Cheaney then fouled out when he reached in on Edwards, who converted two free throws for a 110-107 advantage with 6.1 seconds left.

After Washington inbounded the ball, George Lynch was called for reaching in on Chris Whitney with 1.8 seconds to play. Whitney hit the first free throw and intentionally missed the second, but Abdur-Rahim grabbed the rebound as the Grizzlies ended a seven-game losing streak.

Cheaney scored 24 points and Rod Strickland added 22, 17 assists and nine rebounds for the Wizards, who lost for just the second time in seven games. Forwards Chris Webber and Juwan Howard were both sidelined for the third straight game. Webber has missed five games with a strained right shoulder he suffered on February 2nd, while Howard has missed the last three with a sprained left ankle.

"Everything we've asked for they've given to us and more when you consider the circumstances," said Washington coach Bernie Bickerstaff referring to the injuries to Howard and Webber. "That was a helluva basketball game. They never surrendered. I can't find any gripes with the basketball game."

Daniels hit a jumper to open the extra session, giving the Grizzlies a 100-98 edge with 4:20 left. Tracy Murray, who had 19 points, hit a pair of free throws to tie it with 4:01 remaining. Reeves and Murray then traded jumpers to make it 102-102.

Reeves made a free throw to give the Grizzlies the lead for good, 103-102, with 3:10 to go. Edwards drove for a layup and Reeves dunked to give the Grizzlies a 107-102 advantage with 1:14 to play. Cheaney's jumper cut the deficit to 107-104 with 67 seconds left and neither team scored until Reeves had a free throw with 11.9 seconds left.

The Grizzlies had a 90-77 cushion when Daniels made a running jumper with 7:30 left in the fourth quarter. The Wizards closed within 92-86 when Strickland drove for a layup with 4:23 to play. But Edwards and Daniels answered with consecutive layups and Lynch hit a free throw to push Vancouver's lead to 97-86 with 2:49 to play. Harvey Grant then hit a 20-footer to ignite a 12-1 surge with 2:36 left. Cheaney had four points in the run and Strickland had the other six, capping it with a driving layup with 15.4 seconds to go.

"We played hard, we did as much as we can do," Strickland said. "They just played a better game and got the victory."

Each team had a chance to win in the final seconds of regulation. Abdur-Rahim's nine-footer hit the front and back rim before Grant grabbed it. After a timeout, Strickland's 17-footer from the right side hit off the rim at the buzzer.
