GAME RECAP

Scottie Pippen scored 25 points and keyed a pair of pivotal surges as the Chicago Bulls moved into first place in the Central Division with a 105-97 victory over the Indiana Pacers, their fifth straight triumph.

Michael Jordan scored 27 points to lead the Bulls, who were able to put aside the antics of Dennis Rodman and improve to 39-15, three wins better than the Pacers. Indiana entered the contest one-half game behind Chicago but percentage points ahead of the Bulls.

Rodman missed Sunday's shootaround and Monday's practice. He was at today's shootaround but did not start the game, entering with 3:30 left in the first quarter and grabbing 13 rebounds, three below his league-leading average. Toni Kukoc started in place of Rodman for the second straight game and contributed 19 points.

Reggie Miller scored 34 points, but he was the only Pacer to score in the final 10 minutes of the second quarter, managing eight points as Chicago took control for good. Chris Mullin added 13 points and Dale Davis 11 for Indiana.

"We let them get going early," said Bulls coach Phil Jackson. "We were dissapointed with the effort that we had. We feel that they are an excellent basketball team, but we were certainly superior tonight. It's one and one now, home and home victories. We will just have to see how the final two games shake out between the teams."

Jordan scored 10 points and Kukoc nine as the Bulls grabbed a 29-25 lead after one quarter. A basket by Antonio Davis cut Indiana's deficit to 31-30 with 10:13 remaining in the second quarter, but Jordan scored seven points and Pippen six in a 19-5 burst that gave Chicago a 50-35 lead.

"I'm not sure that this game wasn't a measurement, but that are things we need to work on if we are going to be successful against a team like the Bulls," said a discouraged Miller. "Rebounding is an area where we need to pick it up, we need to be more aggressive on the boards."

The Pacers were outrebounded, 42-26.

Miller ended a scoreless drought of 3 1/2 minutes with a basket at the 6:43 mark. He had a layup with 4:04 to go, then ended another dry spell with a three-pointer with 38 seconds left as the Pacers trailed 52-38 at halftime.

Indiana closed to 75-67 after three quarters and a basket by Jalen Rose cut the deficit to six points with 11:40 remaining. But Chicago ran off 13 of the next 16 points.

Pippen made a 12-footer and three-pointer before Rose's layup. Pippen had a layup to extend the lead to 82-69 with 9:39 to go. Antonio Davis made a free throw, but Jason Caffey dunked and Ron Harper had a three-pointer and technical foul shot to cap the run at 88-72 with 8:13 left.

Two free throws by Mark Jackson capped a 9-2 burst that pulled the Pacers within 103-97 with 46 seconds left. But Jordan had a jumper 10 seconds later to seal it.

"We did not play that well tonight, yet Chicago had a lot to do with it," said Pacers coach Larry Bird. I thought they outquicked us from the beginning of the game and we seemed to have to play catchup for the rest of the game. "

Pippen shot 10-of-20 from the field and added five assists in one of his best games since his return from foot surgery last month. Luc Longley added 14 points and Harper 10 for the Bulls, who shot 53 percent (44-of-83) from the field and held a 42-26 advantage on the boards.

"It was a good battle," said Jordan. "But I don't know if you can call it a statement game. We defended our homecourt. They beat us there, we defended our homecourt, so I don't know what that really proves. The difference in the game tonight was that we established ourselves inside. That and we created some open shots."

Jackson added nine points and nine assists for the Pacers, who shot 49 percent (36-of-73), including 11-of-19 from behind the arc. Miller was 7-of-9 and Mullin 3-of-6.
