GAME RECAP

Voshon Lenard matched a season high with 26 points on 10-of-13 shooting as the Miami Heat notched their third straight win and handed the Minnesota Timberwolves their most lopsided loss of the season, 110-84.

Lenard, coming off a 25-point performance at Toronto on Sunday, was 4-of-5 from three-point range. Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway each added 17 points for Miami, which has won seven of its last eight contests. Hardaway also had nine assists and P.J. Brown 15 rebounds for the Heat, who improved to 19-7 at home.

"There will be more shots for him (Lenard) if he stays open and keeps getting his shots," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We're going to go to him. The challenge for him is that people are going to be looking for him.

"We are chasing some teams right now, and our sight is on Indiana and Chicago. We have been efficient and we're making less mistakes."

Kevin Garnett shot just 7-of-22 and scored 14 points and Stephon Marbury, who was 5-of-11 from the field, added 13 for the Timberwolves, who had won three of their previous four games but dropped to 12-12 on the road. Minnesota's previous worst loss was a 118-93 road setback against the Los Angeles Lakers on November 19th.

Miami limited Minnesota to 35 percent (29-for-83) shooting while connecting on 48 percent (42-for-87). The Heat also won the battle off the boards, 48-39.

"I told our guys I thought they (Miami) played strong and I thought they played harder," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "They came out at the beginning and took us out of things. I was disappointed. I don't think we competed tonight."

Each team was missing a key offensive performer. Minnesota played without leading scorer Tom Gugliotta, who is averaging 20.1 points but is sidelined with an ankle injury. Miami was without forward Jamal Mashburn, who is averaging 15.2 points but underwent surgery for a fractured right thumb Sunday and is expected to miss two months.

"We killed ourselves in the first half," said Minnesota center Stanley Roberts, who shot 4-for-12 and finished with 10 points. "I had two airballs in the first quarter. The offense was being run through me and I didn't get it done. We came out in the fourth quarter and Flip basically said, 'Get something out of it, just run some plays.' It was over and we knew it."

After a three-pointer by Marbury gave Minnesota a 14-11 lead at the 5:54 mark of the first quarter, the Heat reeled off a 7-0 spurt to take the lead for good. Hardaway capped the burst with a layup at 3:46 to give Miami an 18-14 advantage.

Minnesota reduced the deficit to 20-18 with 1:47 left in the quarter on a basket by Garnett, but the Heat responded with an 11-0 run to gain control. Lenard had five points and Dan Majerle four, with a layup by Mourning at the 9:45 mark of the second quarter capping it and giving Miami a 31-18 lead.

Miami used a 12-0 spurt and built its lead to 51-31 on layup by Hardaway with 56 seconds left in the half. Hardaway contributed seven of the 12 points in the run.

The Heat led 53-33 at the break with Lenard and Mourning each scoring 17 points. Minnesota's total was its season-low for a half.

"I knew I was going to get the ball a little bit more," Lenard said. "I have been more aggressive because of that. Once you get a rhythm, you feel like you can't miss. We are an unselfish team and we have guys who don't care who scores."

Minnesota got as close as 57-45 with 7:20 remaining in the third quarter on a layup by Marbury, but was unable to get the deficit under 10 points in the second half. Miami's biggest lead came at 93-61 on a three-pointer by Rex Walters with 8:39 remaining.

"We came out and played hard offensively and defensively," Hardaway said. "With Mash down, Voshon has stepped up his game. Everybody needs to pick up the slack while Mash is out. We did is before while Zo was out and we need to do it while Mash is out. Tonight we came out and buried them."
