GAME RECAP

Rick Fox scored 22 points to lead eight players in double figures as the Los Angeles Lakers snapped a three-game losing streak with their most lopsided victory of the season, a 131-92 rout of the Denver Nuggets.

Kobe Bryant added 21 points and Shaquille O'Neal registered 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Lakers, who have won their three games this season against the NBA's most hapless team by a total of 75 points. Los Angeles has won the last seven meetings between the teams.

LaPhonso Ellis and Johnny Newman scored 19 points apiece for the Nuggets, who have dropped five in a row and seven of their last eight games. Denver's last four losses have come by an average of nearly 29 points per game.

"It was just a feel-good game, that's all," Los Angeles coach Del Harris said. "It was good now that we're going out on the road. Everybody participated, we played well tonight. It would've been nice to have a game like this the first game back after the All-Star break."

Los Angeles needed less than 12 minutes to open a double-digit lead. The Nuggets were up 14-10 when Tony Battie dunked with 6:29 left in the first quarter, but the Lakers answered with a 17-1 run to take a 27-15 lead with 51 seconds remaining in the period on a layup by Sean Rooks. Elden Campbell fueled the surge with five points.

Down 29-19 entering the second, the Nuggets scored the first five points of the period to close within 29-24 on a three-pointer by Anthony Goldwire with 10:18 left in the quarter. They were still down only 10 with 6:28 to go in the half before the Lakers ran off nine straight points, including four from Fox, to take a 49-30 advantage when Eddie Jones buried a three-pointer with 4:31 remaining in the period.

The Lakers, who removed any doubt when they netted the final seven points of the half to extend their lead to 64-38 on Jon Barry's two free throws with 2.1 seconds to go. O'Neal had 10 points in the period and 14 in the half.

"That's just LA for you," said Denver guard Bobby Jackson of the second quarter. "LA is a real good team. You gotta be ready for a good team like that and be prepared for them. We weren't ready for them tonight."

With starters Robert Horry and Nick Van Exel not playing while recovering from various ailments, the second half was an extended chance for normal reserves to pad their stats. Denver never got closer than 22 points in the final 24 minutes while all but one Laker reached double figures.

"If we played like that every day, we'd be first in our division," O'Neal said. "You look at the matchup on paper as a fan and you say 'I don't want to go, they're the Lakers. They're going to win by 40.' Like I said, we play like that every night and we're in first in our division."

Mario Bennett finished with career highs of 17 points and 13 rebounds and Campbell added 14 and eight as the Lakers shot 54 percent (46-of-85) from the field and outrebounded the Nuggets, 52-39. Jones and Barry added 10 points apiece and Sean Rooks had 10. Only Derek Fisher, who started at the point in place of Van Exel, was held to single digits.

Battie and Jackson scored 10 points apiece for the Nuggets, who shot 41 percent (33-of-80).

The 39-point margin of victory was four points more than the Lakers' 132-97 rout of Golden State on November 9th.
