GAME RECAP

Shawn Kemp registered 27 points, 13 rebounds and a season-high eight assists and Cedric Henderson scored six of his career-high 27 points in a 15-4 third-quarter run that gave the Cleveland Cavaliers a 109-95 victory over the New Jersey Nets.

Wesley Person added 23 points and Zydrunas Ilgauskas added 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who beat the Nets for the eighth time in nine games, including a 3-1 mark this season. Cleveland halted its three-game losing streak, won for the second time in eight games overall and improved to 15-0 this season when scoring 100 or more points.

"We needed to turn it around. We have lost enough," said Kemp, who also had a season-high four steals. "It's like looking into a mirror, you have to be honest with yourself and ask, `Are you bringing it?' The best defense is offense. If I'm guarding a guy who is going to score 25 or 30 points, then I'm going to score 25 or 30 points. I'm just happy to get a win, a triple-double would have been nice, too."

Sam Cassell scored 28 points and added 10 assists for New Jersey, which had its four-game home winning streak halted and has lost consecutive games after a five-game winning streak. Kendall Gill added 16 points and Keith Van Horn had 16 and 11 rebounds as the Nets played with just nine healthy players.

New Jersey was without forward Brian Evans, center Rony Seikaly and guard Sherman Douglas. Evans and Seikaly were acquired Thursday in a trade with Orlando and were held out pending physicals. Seikaly will miss roughly three weeks with an ankle injury, though he will have an MRI on Saturday, while Douglas sat out with a sore right wrist.

"Not one of our better games. We just didn't have the energy tonight," Nets coach John Calipari said. "During some of the plays, I said to myself, `What are they thinking?' They must have wanted it more, because they played harder. I actually had a hard time coaching this game, harder than any other game this season. At times, I was so angry."

The Nets held a 61-58 lead when Henderson started the decisive run with a layup at the nine-minute mark of the third quarter. Henderson scored on a fast-break layup to give Cleveland the lead for good and Person sank a three-pointer to give Cleveland a 65-61 lead with 8:19 remaining in the period.

Van Horn and Cassell scored around a jumper by Cleveland's Brevin Knight to get New Jersey within two points, but Henderson hit a 13-footer off a feed from Kemp and Knight found Ilgauskas for a dunk on the break to make it 71-65. Ilgauskas capped the burst with a tip-in at 6:48.

"It starts with the competitive nature that you put out on the floor," said Cleveland coach Mike Fratello. "Tonight, we came out and had early energy, we got a monstrous game out of Cedric tonight. It looked like a game played the way we used to play. It is just great to get a good win, it feels like a long time since we won and it seems like it took us a while to get this win."

Person totaled nine points in the third quarter as Cleveland built the lead to 89-75. The Nets never got within single digits after a driving layup by Henderson made it 83-72 with 2:28 remaining in the third quarter.

"The whole team showed up tonight and we all played well," said Henderson, who was scoreless in two of his three previous games. "I play well when my team plays well. We didn't let them back into the game tonight. We were just running well tonight. I hope I can be more consistent with my game."

Bobby Sura added 14 points off the bench as the Cavaliers shot 49 percent (42-of-85) from the field and held the Nets to just 38 percent (34-of-90). It was a familiar script for the Nets, who got 32 points from Cassell but shot 31 percent in an 85-74 loss to Cleveland on November 13th.

Jayson Williams finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds while Kerry Kittles added 13 and eight for the Nets, who allowed the opposition a season-high 13 steals.

"It's hard to beat them guys," Williams said. "He (Fratello) does a good job of getting his guys going, especially against us. They have a good team, a good setup. We took them a little too lightly tonight. They play so well against us, I'd rather play the Bulls."
