GAME RECAPBrian Williams scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds, helping the Detroit Pistons end a seven-game road losing streak with a 94-82 win over the Dallas Mavericks.
Lindsey Hunter and Jerry Stackhouse added 14 points apiece for the Pistons, who snapped a four-game overall losing streak and won for the first time on the road since January 22nd against the Los Angeles Clippers. Grant Hill was just 2-for-11 from the floor, finishing with five points, but he contributed six assists and five rebounds.
Detroit also picked up its fifth consecutive win against the Mavericks and fifth straight win in Dallas. The last time the Pistons lost at Reunion Arena was January 19th, 1993.
Erick Strickland scored 19 points and Shawn Bradley added 12 and 13 rebounds for the Mavericks, who have dropped three straight home games and eight of nine overall. Hubert Davis had 15 points but Michael Finley shot just 4-for-14 from the field and finished with eight points as the Mavs dropped to 4-19 against the Eastern Conference.
"We basically shut Hill down but the other players stepped up," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "Grant is very content with what he has to do. He took what was there and made passes."
Cedric Ceballos played in his first game for Dallas since coming over from Phoenix in a deal for Dennis Scott. In 23 minutes off the bench Ceballos had eight points and five rebounds.
"I know potentially when I get Ceballos into better shape, and when he starts playing consistently, you'll see some real good skills," Nelson added.
"My mind was working a lot, just trying to figure out what was going on," Ceballos said. "I messed up my teammates a little bit. I had to ask them questions when they had to concentrate on the game."
Detroit outrebounded Dallas 51-40, with Hunter and Jerome Williams chipping in with eight boards each, and the Pistons held the Mavericks to 41 percent (33-for-80) shooting from the field. Detroit shot 45 percent (37-for-82).
"I thought we did a good job defensively all the way around," Detroit coach Alvin Gentry said. "For us to be successful, we have to get teams shooting between 41 and 44 percent. We had a good practice yesterday, which brought up our intensity. We have to take that intensity on the practice court into the games."
Detroit took a 22-21 lead at the end of the first quarter, with Williams leading the way with six points.
The Mavericks established their last lead of the game, 24-22, one minute into the second quarter after Davis connected on a three-pointer.
A basket by Martin Muursepp pulled Dallas into a 28-28 tie with 9:14 left in the first half, but on its next possession, Detroit took the lead for good 30-28 on a short jumper by Rick Mahorn. That field goal by Mahorn sparked an 8-0 run by the Pistons. Stackhouse capped the spurt with a driving layup that gave Detroit a 36-28 advantage.
Dallas trimmed the Detroit lead to 44-41 at the half, but the Pistons used a 13-6 spurt midway through the third quarter to extend their lead. A three-pointer by Hunter ignited the burst and a pair of free throws by Williams with 27 seconds left in the quarter capped it as Detroit took a 70-56 lead. Hunter had two three-pointers and Dumars five points during the run.
Detroit increased its lead to 85-67 with 6:20 remaining after a short jumper by Mahorn. Dallas put together a 15-6 run later in the quarter to cut the deficit to nine points, 91-82 with 1:21 left, following a 10-foot jumper by Strickland, but the Mavs could pull no closer.
"This road trip didn't go as well as we wanted (Detroit went 1-4), but we got a win going into some games at home, so that's a big factor for us," Hunter said.
