GAME RECAP

Karl Malone had 24 points and 13 rebounds as the Utah Jazz overcame a poor shooting performance from the field with clutch shooting from the line in a 79-77 victory over the San Antonio Spurs, their seventh straight triumph.

Jeff Hornacek had 11 points and Shandon Anderson added 10 off the bench for the Jazz, who shot just 38 percent (25-for-66) from the floor but made 28-of-33 free throws (85 percent). Utah opened a 1 1/2-game lead over San Antonio in the Midwest Division.

"For the most part we stopped them when we had to," Malone said. "It was not pretty. We just wanted to make other guys shoot the ball from the outside and we did that."

Rookie Tim Duncan had 29 points and 15 rebounds for the Spurs, who played without All-Star center David Robinson for the third straight game.

Duncan, a 61 percent free-throw shooter, was fouled after taking an inbounds pass with six-tenths of a second remaining. His first attempt bounced off the rim and he intentionally missed the second shot, but San Antonio could not grab the rebound. Duncan made 7-of-12 free throws as the Spurs shot 69 percent (20-for-29) from the line.

"I don't know if it had anything to do with the pressure or not," Hornacek said about Duncan's miss. "He's shooting 60 percent this season. You can put him on the line with anyone in this league."

"We played hard all the way," Duncan said. "We just made too many mistakes and missed too many free throws to pull it out. Going into the fourth quarter we knew we needed a surge. We never gave up. We never thought we were down too much. We just came up a little short."

Duncan hit a pair of free throws to pull the Spurs within 77-72 with 2:38 to go and Jaren Jackson converted a three-point play 33 seconds later. The Spurs stopped the Jazz on consecutive possessions but failed to tie as Duncan and Vinny Del Negro missed jumpers.

"No losses are easy but I thought the guys were awesome tonight, just flat out awesome," said San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich. "If you look at the stat sheet, what killed us was the free throws. The defense was outstanding and the guys couldn't have done more than we asked of them."

Malone hit a pair of free throws for a 79-75 lead with 38 seconds to play. Duncan's turnaround jumper made it 79-77 with 29 seconds left. Malone's jumper from the left wing hit off the back iron with 3.8 seconds remaining and San Antonio grabbed the rebound to set up the inbounds pass to Duncan.

Howard Eisley ignited a 12-2 run and put Utah up for good when his basket made it 16-14 with 4:28 to play in the first period. Anderson completed a three-point play to cap the run for a 26-16 advantage with 9:33 remaining in the second. Malone had 12 points and Hornacek added eight in the first half as the Jazz took a 43-35 lead into halftime.

Duncan had six points in a 10-3 surge that he capped with a pair of free throws, pulling the Spurs within 52-49 with 3:08 to go in the third. Malone answered with a jumper with 2:52 left, sparking a 12-4 burst that gave Utah a 64-53 cushion at the end of the third.

Adam Keefe, who had seven points and five boards, hit a jumper to give Utah its biggest lead of the game, 68-54, with 8:48 left.
