GAME RECAP

Scottie Pippen scored 23 points and Michael Jordan added 19 and eight rebounds to lead the Chicago Bulls to their seventh straight victory, 94-88 over the shorthanded Washington Wizards.

Toni Kukoc had 17 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four blocks for the Bulls, who have won two meetings in Washington since a 90-83 home loss to the Wizards on November 12th. The Bulls shot 43 percent (38-for-89) from the field, including an 8-for-23 (35 percent) performance by Jordan.

"Down the stretch we made our passes to the open man who would get the shot," Jordan said. "We're playing consistent basketball now and I'm pretty confident we'll be in there. I can accept tonight, I wasn't shooting very well but we won and that's what matters the most."

Calbert Cheaney scored a season-high 30 points and Rod Strickland added 19 points and 12 assists for the Wizards, who have lost their last four games, all without forwards Chris Webber and Juwan Howard, who were expected to return tonight but remained sidelined. Cheaney made 12-of-23 shots from the field, but the Wizards shot just 37 percent (32-for-87).

"I just wanted to be more aggressive with my play," Cheaney said. "I got my confidence back."

"Some guys were playing out of their element," said Washington coach Bernie Bickerstaff. "They gave it what they had and that's all you can ask. We're a team that gives you matchup problems. We just don't have the advantage in that at this point in time."

Playing in front of President Clinton, Washington has now dropped 12 of its last 14 meetings with Chicago. Clinton also saw the Wizards beat Chicago at the United Center and was on hand when Washington beat Seattle in the first game at the MCI Center in December.

Pippen scored four points in an 8-0 run that ended the first period. Ron Harper's driving layup with 22 seconds left in the quarter capped it for a 30-22 advantage.

"It was pretty aggressive out there tonight," Pippen said. "We're playing better and when it's all said and done we're going to be in there. The team is starting to get into a groove."

The Wizards managed to close within 72-68 when Tracy Murray hit a three-pointer with 11:14 left in the fourth quarter. Dennis Rodman and Pippen answered with consecutive layups, giving the Bulls a 76-68 cushion with 10:31 to play. Rodman finished with 17 rebounds and four points.

Murray, who had 18 points, hit a jumper to cut Chicago's lead to 76-72 with 8:27 to go. But Kukoc made a layup and Scott Burrell sank a jumper to push the lead to 80-72 with 7:01 left.

The Wizards had their biggest lead with 6:56 remaining in the opening quarter when Cheaney sank a three-pointer to make it 17-10. Jordan hit a jumper and Kukoc followed with back-to-back layups to pull Chicago within 17-16 with 5:42 to go in the first. Pippen scored four points as the Bulls closed the first with an 8-0 surge for a 30-22 lead that they never lost.

Washington did not come closer than eight points in the second period and the Bulls had a 52-36 bulge when Kukoc dunked with 2:32 left in the first half. Chicago had its biggest lead of the game when Jordan converted a pair of free throws to make it 71-54 with 5:45 to play in the third. The Wizards responded with nine consecutive points, cutting the deficit to 71-63 when Darvin Ham hit a free throw with 70 seconds remaining in the third.

"We had a chance in the first half to open it up and we didn't," Kukoc said. "We let them back into it, which we can't do but we found a way to put it together in the end. I just wanted to be more aggressive with my play. I got my confidence back."
