GAME RECAP

Gary Payton recovered from a poor shooting performance to score 10 points in the final four minutes and rally the Seattle SuperSonics to a 101-100 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, who have dropped seven straight.

Payton was just 1-of-9 from the field before hitting all four shots -- including a pair of three-pointers -- in the waning minutes to finish with 12 points.

"Some nights I'm just going to have to be the leader," said Payton. "That's how much confidence coach has in me. He knows that I'm going to make something special happen."

The Sonics needed some late hustle to avoid losing for the second time in three home games after Darrick Martin's third three-pointer of the fourth quarter gave the Clippers a 97-91 lead with 2:29 left.

Seattle was up to the task, as Sam Perkins began the comeback with a three-pointer and Payton scored the next five points with a lay-in and a three-pointer to put Seattle ahead for good with a minute to play.

Lamond Murray netted 24 points and nine rebounds and Eric Piatkowski, who connected from behind the arc to end the Sonics' 10-0 burst with 15.9 seconds to go, had 19 for Los Angeles, which fell to 7-21 at home.

Payton scored an easy layup on a lob pass from Vin Baker for a 101-97 lead with 33 seconds left before Piatkowski's basket.

After his three-pointer, Piatkowski deflected Seattle's ensuing inbounds pass, starting a scramble that resulted in a jump ball between Murray and Nate McMillan. Martin recovered the tap and was promptly fouled with 2.9 to play, forcing a final inbounds. But Martin's three-point fling went off the back of the rim, ending the upset bid and dropping the Clippers to their 15th loss in 16 games.

"I thought that shot was in. I even had my dance all ready to do," admitted Martin.

"There's no way in the league you can play perfect basketeball every night," said McMillan. "The key is to get the win. Beating them by 40 wouldn't have been any more important than beating them by one."

The Clippers, who shot 50 percent (10-of-20) from three-point range and 48 percent (37-of-77) overall, grabbed a 35-26 lead after one period on the strength of 15 points by Murray.

"We took them down to the wire, and we can walk away from this one and know that we gave them the best game we could tonight," Murray said. "All we can do is come back for the next one."

Seattle outscored the Clippers 16-8 over the final 4 1/2 minutes of the second quarter to pull within 53-51 at halftime. Baker had 14 of his 27 points in the first half for the SuperSonics.

Hawkins finished with 18 points and five assists for Seattle, which shot 48 percent (39-of-81) and got a healthy contribution from its bench. Perkins finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in 28 minutes, Dale Ellis added 14 points and Greg Anthony contributed 10 and three steals.

The Sonics launched 24 three-pointers, hitting 10, and were outrebounded 46-33 by Los Angeles. Both teams shot poorly from the free throw line, with Seattle hitting 13-of-24 (54 percent) from the stripe and the Clippers not much better at 59 percent (16-of-27).

"They may have been the better team tonight," conceded Seattle coach George Karl. "We played very hard, but they never let down. They played a great game."

Seattle, which recovered from a home loss to Boston on Thursday by beating Denver at Key Arena Saturday, outdistanced the Clippers for most of the third quarter. But after Hawkins connected from behind the arc to give the Sonics a 70-59 cushion with 3:40 remaining, Piatkowski ignited a 14-3 burst with a pair of three-pointers as Los Angeles closed to within 74-73 after three quarters.

Isaac Austin had 17 points but committed seven of 17 turnovers for Los Angeles, which was also victimized by 11 steals.
