GAME RECAP

Tim Duncan scored 28 points and Vinny Del Negro added a season-high 23 to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 105-99 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Will Perdue contributed 12 points for the Spurs, who had lost their last three home meetings with the Timberwolves. San Antonio improved to 3-2 without All-Star center David Robinson, who has an inflamed right knee and is scheduled to be re-evaluated on Wednesday.

"It's tough and it's different," said Duncan about Robinson's absence. "I can really feel it now. He demands a lot of attention and respect on the floor. But we're adjusting and guys are stepping up and playing well."

Del Negro made five free throws as the Spurs hit 8-of-10 shots from the line in the final 3:46 to seal the win.

"It's great to go out and win," Duncan said. "We felt good and really played well tonight. We hit some big free throws down the stretch. We gave them a few too many chances but we hit our free throws at the end. Vinny did a great job tonight, especially hitting the free throws to close the game out."

Kevin Garnett scored 17 of his 25 points in the first quarter for the Timberwolves, who have lost five of their last six road games. Stephon Marbury made his first five shots from the field and finished with 24 points for Minnesota, which lost for the third time in its last seven games overall.

Perdue hit a layup to ignite a 14-3 burst and give the Spurs the lead for good, 40-38, with 5:29 remaining in the second period. Duncan had five points in the run that ended with a pair of free throws by Malik Rose with 4:20 to play in the second. The Spurs held a 52-41 lead at the break.

"Malik played well and Will played good once again," Del Negro said. "We were lucky in some respects but we made the free throws down the stretch and they missed some three-pointers there at the end."

Minnesota closed within 55-52 when Marbury drove for a layup with 9:13 left in the third. Duncan answered with a layup and a free throw, but Cherokee Parks hit a jumper to cut the deficit to 58-54 with 6:46 remaining in the third. Avery Johnson's layup gave the Spurs a 60-54 advantage and ignited an 11-3 run with 6:24 to play in the third. Del Negro's three-pointer capped the run and gave San Antonio its biggest lead of the game, 69-57, with just under four minutes left.

Minnesota did not close the deficit under five points in the fourth period until Marbury hit a three-pointer to make it 101-97 with 25.9 seconds to play. Del Negro answered with a pair of free throws with 23.7 seconds left. Marbury's layup cut the deficit to 103-99 with 17.2 seconds to go and Del Negro sank another pair of free throws for the final margin with 5.6 seconds left.
