GAME RECAP

Chris Webber returned from a shoulder injury to score a season-high 36 points and grab 13 rebounds and Rod Strickland added 31 points and 15 assists to lead the Washington Wizards to a 124-112 victory over the Houston Rockets.

Webber, who missed eight games after straining his right shoulder against the Detroit Pistons on February 2nd, netted 13 points in the third quarter. He finished 13-of-24 from the field, helping his team end a four-game losing streak and record their highest point total of the season.

"I felt good today, real good," said Webber. "I don't want to say that I expected this, but that is what I push myself for. I wasn't tired, it was real good to be back with everyone. I won't know until I go to sleep if it becomes sore again. Right now all we need to do is win, simple as that."

Strickland had 19 points and Tracy Murray chipped in with 14 of his 27 in the first half, which the Wizards ended with an 18-4 run to go ahead for good. Strickland capped his spectacular half with a 44-foot buzzer-beating heave that gave Washington a 58-50 lead at the break.

Kevin Willis had 20 points and 12 rebounds and Hakeem Olajuwon contributed 19 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three blocks in his 1,000th career game for the Rockets, who have lost three in a row.

"I'm at a loss to understand why we didn't put up a bigger fight," said Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "I mean the defense... a season-high by 124? It's ridiculous. At halftime we talked about pulling together, but that didn't last to long. It wasn't just Webber, it was the whole team."

Clyde Drexler and Eddie Johnson scored 17 points, Charles Barkley added 16 and nine boards and Matt Bullard totaled 10 points for the the Rockets, who had six scorers in double figures but were victimized by 20 turnovers.

"Anytime you lose to a team like that, that isn't even going to make the playoffs, you've got to wonder," said a dejected Barkley, who was ejected after picking up his second technical foul with 2:56 to play. "You'll get what you deserve in life. Right now we're the eighth (playoff) seed. I just can't put into words what I feel tonight, it was not good. I'm frustrated and disappointed."

Washington turned those miscues into 23 points while committing just nine turnovers of their own. Calbert Cheaney connected on just 6-of-20 shots but managed 16 points as the Wizards shot 51 percent (44-of-86) from the field.

Washington, which avoided its third straight home loss and improved to 16-6 at the MCI Center, fell behind 46-40 after a lay-in by Brent Price with 4:59 to go in the second quarter. But the Wizards roared back, as Strickland scored seven points and Webber four.

Webber, whose start was a gametime decision, took over in the third quarter as the Wizards built their biggest cushion of the night. His two free throws with 3:34 to play gave Washington an 84-65 bulge.

Houston never recovered, getting only as close as nine points with just over a minute remaining before suffering its first loss to the Wizards in five games.

"I think he (Webber) made a difference in a lot of areas," said Washington coach Bernie Bickerstaff. "He's a talent and a presence. Unfortunately, I felt that with Juwan (Howard) and Chris, we could have made a (winning) run. Right now, every game is critical."

Washington got back to the .500 mark at 28-28 despite the absence of starting forward Juwan Howard, who has missed several games with an ankle injury.
