GAME RECAP

Rookie Cedric Henderson scored a career-high 30 points and Carl Thomas made a pair of three-pointers in a pivotal third-quarter run as the Cleveland Cavaliers remained unbeaten against the Vancouver Grizzlies with a 106-101 victory.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored 22 points and Shawn Kemp added 16 for the Cavaliers, who won for just the third time in their last 11 games.

After leading comfortably for most of the game, Cleveland found itself clinging to a 72-71 loead with 2:16 left in the third period. But Thomas responded with a three-pointer to spark a 9-0 burst that broke open the game.

Ilgauskas made a free throw before Thomas, a second-year guard, hit another from beyond the arc with 57 seconds left, giving the Cavaliers a 79-71 bulge before Ilgauskas capped the spurt with a layup with 14 seconds remaining.

"I think I shot a lot but as a shooter, after I hit my first two, it felt real good," said Thomas. "When I first got here I was passing the ball, but tonight the shot was there and I was taking it."

"It was a win that we needed very badly," said Cleveland coach Mike Fratello. "Because everyone wanted it so badly we ended up doing things we normally don't do down the stretch. We were fortunate to hang on."

Bryant Reeves scored 29 points and George Lynch added 16 for the Grizzlies, who have dropped five straight games overall and seven in a row on the road. Vancouver fell to 3-25 away from home.

Cleveland led 16-12 midway through the first quarter when a free throw by Person sparked a 14-2 run. Ilgauskas capped the spurt with a layup that gave Cleveland a 30-14 lead with 2:26 left in the quarter. Person, who finished with 14 points, and Ilgauskas had five apiece in the burst.

Vancouver was able to draw within 38-32 with 7:44 left in the opening half, but Cleveland responded to take a 60-49 lead at the break. Cleveland made 27-of-43 shots (63 percent) in the opening half and enjoyed a 23-14 edge on the boards.

Henderson was 9-of-11 from the floor and Ilgauskas was 7-of-10. Kemp was 4-of-5 for 12 points, six rebounds and six assists before the break.

"We dug a tough hole for ourselves with 34 Cleveland points in the first quarter and 60 in the half," Vancouver coach Brian Hill said. "It was kind of tough to come back and a couple of big plays in the fourth quarter could have turned the game around."

"I'm not the guy who is supposed to get the ball and score," Henderson said. "I am a role player who just runs the floor and tries to get easy baskets."

Jumpers by Henderson and Kemp pushed the lead to 64-51 two minutes into the third quarter, but the Grizzlies went on a 13-0 run to knot the contest. Michael Smith and Reeves combined to score the first 11 points in the burst.

After the second of Shareef Abdur-Rahim's two free throws knotted the contest with 5:54 to go, the game remained tight until Thomas sank his three-pointer to spark the pivotal run. Cleveland was just 9-of-22 from the field in the third quarter.

Vancouver got within 92-89 on a three-pointer by Pete Chilcutt with just under four minutes left, but Person answered with a three-pointer to seal the victory.

The Grizzlies, who were outrebounded 41-36 and committed 18 turnovers, were just 20-of-32 from the line in falling to 0-6 all-time against Cleveland.
