GAME RECAP

Hot-shooting Glen Rice scored 33 points and Matt Geiger added 20, leading the Charlotte Hornets to their third straight road win, a 98-88 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

Rice hit 12-of-18 shots, including 3-of-3 from three-point range, as he reached 30 points for the 14th time this season.

David Wesley added 12 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and five steals for Charlotte, which wrapped up its six-game road trip with three wins, matching its longest road winning streak of the season. The Hornets also won three in a row on the road from January 7th-11th.

"I was real pleased with our effort, coming off this road trip," Charlotte coach Dave Cowens said. "This was an important win against Detroit. I think it was our best overall game of the trip. We passed the ball very well tonight. Our game plan was to go inside as much as possible. You win with defense, but the offense really gave us a boost."

Grant Hill scored 27 points and Brian Williams added 14 before fouling out in the fourth quarter for the Pistons, who lost for the first time in three games. Detroit has won more than two in a row just once this season, when it captured four straight from December 7th-13th.

"We were disppointed overall in our defensive effort," Detroit coach Alvin Gentry said. "We can't afford to have breakdowns and we did, especially with our weak-side help. One thing about Charlotte is that they have tremendous scorers. You have to have great team defense against them and I thought ours was just very average.

"Charlotte likes to seduce you into playing a running game. They can score 100 points, easily. We can't. We don't want to play a 100-point game."

After Hill scored off a fast-break dunk to tie the game 61-61 with 9:22 left in the third quarter, Charlotte responded with a 12-0 run to open up the game.

Rice, who contributed six points in the spurt, opened it with a jumper at 9:01 and finished it off with a layup at 4:13 to move Charlotte ahead, 73-61.

The closest Detroit got the rest of the way was 88-82 with 3:42 remaining when Lindsey Hunter hit a pair of free throws. But Geiger made a free throw and Rice added a three-pointer to make it 92-82 at the 2:22 mark.

"We didn't play aggressive enough on defense for the whole game," Hunter said. "We're at our best when we're stopping people. We have to create offense from our defense. We have to keep teams around 80 points. That's how we'll win games. Offense comes and goes, but you have to keep intensity on defense for the whole game."

With Rick Mahorn grabbing 12 rebounds and Jerome Williams 11, the Pistons won the battle of the boards, 45-31. Anthony Mason led the Hornets with 11 rebounds.

Charlotte outshot Detroit from the field, 54 percent (33-for-61) to 45 percent (35-for-78). The Hornets also hit 4-of-9 three-pointers while the Pistons misfired on 15-of-20 attempts from behind the arc, with Joe Dumars going 3-for-9 and Jerry Stackhouse 0-for-4.

"It was one of our best defensive efforts of the year and everyone was helping everybody out," Mason said. "They were still conscious of Glen, but our passing was very good and other people were knocking down shots. It was nice to win the last three games on this road trip, especially with the next four at home. We need to keep building for the playoffs."

"You can't score 35 in the second half and win in this league," Gentry said. "That puts too much pressure on the defense."
