GAME RECAP

Bo Outlaw scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Derek Harper added 18 points to lead the Orlando Magic to their fifth straight victory, a 100-79 rout of the Dallas Mavericks.

Outlaw, a five-year veteran in his first season with the Magic, shattered his previous career high of 24 set November 15th against Washington. He scored 10 points in the third quarter, when Orlando broke open the game.

"I thought it was a misprint," said Outlaw, who took advantage of his matchup with Mavericks 7-6 center Shawn Bradley and was 11-of-17 from the field. "Everybody in the league lays off me out there. He laid off me and he took the pump fake. I don't know why. That's all I needed. I'm quicker than he is."

"We are deploying Mr. Outlaw a little differently," Magic coach Chuck Daly said. "Not only does he rebound, handle the ball and play defense, he now is our leading scorer. It was not a pretty game but it was a very good win for us."

Harper, a long-time Maverick, scored 18 points for the second straight game. He fueled bursts in the second and third quarters for the Magic, who are one win shy of their longest winning streak of the season, established from November 14th-22nd. Ironically, the bulk of both streaks came without All-Star guard Penny Hardaway.

"I wouldn't have the slightest idea," Daly said. "I'd like to tell you we did something magic, but it's all about the people who are performing. ... We have to play with a little desperation. We got a lot of new people and we are trying to find out about their game."

Michael Finley scored 16 points for the Mavericks, who were swept in the two-game season series and fell to 3-24 on the road. Dallas made just 8-of-16 free throws while Orlando was 26-of-34.

"I don't think you will see too much good basketball from us the rest of the year," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "We are going to play our younger guys. ... Hopefully, we can play better than we did tonight."

A three-point play by Cedric Ceballos closed the Mavericks to 30-28 with 4:50 remaining in the second quarter, but Dallas went cold thereafter as Orlando closed the period with a 14-6 spurt. Harper scored four points in the run, including a 17-footer with 44 seconds left that gave the Magic a 44-34 lead.

A tip-in by A.C. Green cut the deficit to 53-45 with 7:04 to go in the third quarter before Outlaw and Harper took charge, combining for 11 points in a 13-3 run. Outlaw scored six points, including a three-point play that built Orlando's lead to 66-48 with 3:50 left in the period.

"We are finding a groove with each other, where to get each other the ball," Outlaw said. "We are playing together as a team and trying hard on defense."

The Magic led 74-54 entering the fourth quarter and opened their largest lead at 95-71 on a basket by Kevin Edwards with 2:31 to play.

Outlaw, a 57 percent foul shooter, was 7-of-9 from the line. Nick Anderson added 13 points for the Magic, who shot 46 percent (36-of-78) from the field and held a 47-29 rebounding advantage. Danny Schayes grabbed 12 rebounds and Horace Grant 10.

"Outlaw was 7-for-9 on free throws," Daly said. "I don;t know anyone who works harder on free throws than he does."

"He killed us," Nelson said of Outlaw. "You have to root for a guy like that. We did not have a guy that could handle him."

Ceballos added 13 points for the Mavericks, who shot 48 percent (34-of-71) but committed 19 turnovers, leading to 27 points for Orlando.
