GAME RECAP

Tim Duncan continued his strong play without David Robinson in the lineup, recording 24 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocked shots to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 97-86 victory over the Toronto Raptors, who lost their sixth straight road game.

Duncan shot 9-of-15 from the field and made 6-of-7 free throws as the Spurs improved to 4-2 without All-Star center Robinson, who has an an inflamed right knee. Duncan is averaging 25.3 points and 13.0 rebounds in Robinson's absence.

"They just kept coming at me and I got some good breaks and good positioning," Duncan said. "I got to knock a few away. It was good for me."

Will Perdue, who has moved to center with Robinson sidelined, had nine points and 13 rebounds and Avery Johnson contributed seven points and eight assists.

"Will's been playing well for us," Johnson said. "This is another indication of us coming together as a team."

Vinny Del Negro made his first six shots from the field and finished with 18 points for San Antonio, which improved to 22-6 at home. Monty Williams scored eight of his season-high 16 points in the third quarter.

"It feels good right now," said Del Negro, who shot 8-for-11 from the field. "I just try to get some rhythm going. With Sean (Elliott) and Chuck (Person) out, we just all need to step up. It's going real well right now."

Doug Christie scored 17 points and Chauncey Billups added 15 for the Raptors, who have lost seven of their last eight games overall. Gary Trent had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Toronto, which has dropped five of six all-time meetings with the Spurs.

"We had five turnovers at halftime," said Toronto coach Butch Carter. "Since the changes we have been a low turnover team. But in the second we half we began to force things. We are a team looking for a little light."

Christie made a pair of free throws to pull the Raptors within 52-49 with 10:32 left in the third quarter. But the Spurs responded with an 8-2 burst, capped by Duncan's bank shot with 8:19 remaining. Christie came back with a 12-footer but Williams answered that with three straight baskets, with his dunk making it 66-53 with 6:45 left in the third.

The Spurs built their lead to 19 points twice in the fourth period. Carl Herrera's free throw made it 85-66 with 8:34 left and Reggie Geary's free throw opened a 91-72 margin with four minutes to play.

Duncan had eight points and Del Negro seven as San Antonio held a 29-27 edge at the end of the first. Toronto had its final lead when Reggie Slater hit a layup to make it 33-31 with 8:35 left in the second quarter.

Duncan made a layup and free throw to put the Spurs ahead for good, 38-35, with 5:27 left in the second period. He had 16 points in the first half as San Antonio held a 49-45 lead at the break.
